View Full Version : NBA Team Name
metro 02-20-2008, 12:22 PM I agree with Watson. More than likely we'll see a buyout or at least leaving the "Sonics" name in Seattle. I do like the OKC Outlaws and don't think it's hickish but I don't see that happening. Hopefully though doubtfully it will go to a vote of the public on some sort of online poll.
Karried 02-20-2008, 12:48 PM I REALLY REALLY hope they have a public voting on what the team should be named....
You saw what happened to the state quarter.
I like the Thunderbirds... a lot. I love the jet team who do flight formations with the same name out at Tinker. It's Perfect.
Wouldn't "Thunderbirds" get shortened to "T-Birds" fairly often?
I wonder if that would conflict with the T-Wolves up in Minnesota.
Watson410 02-20-2008, 01:25 PM I like Oklahoma City Outlaws much more than I like Oklahoma City Thunderbirds.

"The Oklahoma City Sommeliers"
-- to avoid a 'hickish' name.
flintysooner 02-20-2008, 01:56 PM Oklahoma City Renaissance
solitude 02-20-2008, 11:21 PM Thunderbirds is okay. But what about the Oklahoma City Thunder?
I always have liked singular type names as in, "But then the Thunder came to town...", "Up next for the Lakers - the rolling Thunder from Oklahoma City."

When I hear/see "T-Birds", I instantly think of "Grease". I guess the team could have a 50s/60s night to tie it all together. :)
JOHNINSOKC 02-25-2008, 07:13 PM Oklahoma City Thunderbirds sounds great, but I like OKC Thunder more. It's like Orlando has the Magic and we can be the Thunder!:) I think a one syllable name sounds better IMO.
dcsooner 02-26-2008, 01:44 AM I like OKC Thunder. Great Job
Oh GAWD the Smell! 02-26-2008, 04:44 AM Oklahoma City Thunderbirds sounds great, but I like OKC Thunder more. It's like Orlando has the Magic and we can be the Thunder!:) I think a one syllable name sounds better IMO.
Uhhhh....:Smiley127
And...OKC Flycatchers has a catchy ring. We could put cute little birds on their outfits too.
Watson410 02-26-2008, 08:29 AM Haha yeah really!!! Let's just hope they don't leave the decision of the teams name up to us...
bigjkt405 02-26-2008, 10:52 AM I would be cool with the T-Birds (Thunderbirds) or the Outlaws.....
CCOKC 02-26-2008, 06:07 PM Whatever the name ends up being we have to think of the mascot that goes with the name. I absolutely loved Hugo and he went so well with the Hornets. There are some mascots that just don't seem to go with the team because there is no real way anything could go with the name. Like the gorilla for the Suns, a bear for the Nuggets and a Squatch for the Sonics.
OKC Nightmare...too childish?
OKC Bisons...too hickish?
Just trying to stimulate the think-pool.
Karried 02-27-2008, 07:20 AM I didn't think about the mascot.... What would we end up if we picked Thunderbirds?
Big Bird?
A lightening bolt.
A cloud?
Uh oh.. now I'm worried.

Thunderbird is also a reference to the bird creature that tops a totem pole. The second pic is the Thunderbird mascot from Casper College.

Although I like Thunder too unless "new english" has replaced what I grew up with that is two syllables
johnnyincog 02-28-2008, 05:08 PM i was thinking about this the other day and like calling them the Wildcats as an homage to the wildcatters of our state's beginnings. i guess the main problem would be that is sounds similar to the bobcats.
CCOKC 02-28-2008, 06:30 PM I think I like the Thunderbirds the best of all of the suggestions so far the more I think about it. I like the idea of paying homage to our native American roots but in a classy way, not a derogatory, cartoony way that so many teams have gotten into trouble for.
OkieHornet 02-29-2008, 10:47 AM i have no knowledge of this, but i'd bet there's already a team name/colors/uniform design in the works... Bennett, et al, seem to be pretty smart guys and this seems like something that would have already been thought out and worked on for when/if the time comes...
Karried 02-29-2008, 11:04 AM If we don't extend the tax, we'll have no team to even think about naming.
The Oklahoma -No Pro Team- Tumbleweeds
...but if we vote yes, how about the OKC WarChiefs or just Chiefs?
I would also like to see the uni's colored red, not only because of the tie to Native America but our dirt.
Oklahoma City WarChiefs
betts 03-03-2008, 03:56 AM Let's vote YES so we can continue this discussion!
I'm voting YES tomorrow. I just received my voter registration card last week. I was sweating bullets thinking I was never going to get it in time.
El Gato Pollo Loco!!! 03-03-2008, 04:41 PM Let's vote YES so we can continue this discussion!
Vote Yes and let's not.

Ditto. Can't wait to use it for the first time tomorrow morning to vote YES.
Vote Yes and let's not.
How about we vote YES and continue the thread as we obviously want to? You don't have to participate in this thread.

Oklahoma City WarChiefs
That would never go over in the touchy politically correct climate we live in these days.
the_Mont 03-04-2008, 09:12 PM I'm all for the Oklahoma City Thunderbirds. Also, maybe we could look in to the state's past sports teams... the Oklahoma City 89ers anyone? Not only does it fit in w/ the Oklahoma land run, but the NBA only has one team w/ a numerical mascot- the Philly 76ers.
Nixon7 03-04-2008, 09:22 PM OKC T-Birds!!!!!
Sea-Town Sonics 03-10-2008, 02:09 AM Seattle has a hockey team named the Thunderbirds...you gonna try and steal that too?
kevinpate 03-10-2008, 06:05 AM Nah, we already have one of those, but thanks for the idea. hey, Muskogee, y'all want a hockey team? Call Clay at 1-800-puck-off and see if he'll foot the downpayment
Oh GAWD the Smell! 03-10-2008, 06:07 AM Seattle has a hockey team named the Thunderbirds...you gonna try and steal that too?
No, but we'll take that space needle. It'll help spruce up our fairgrounds a bit.
Midtowner 03-10-2008, 10:55 AM Seattle has a hockey team named the Thunderbirds...you gonna try and steal that too?
Your neighbors to the north, Portland did steal our minor league hockey team's name, so it'd be fitting :)
betts 03-10-2008, 11:34 AM We've had the Thunderbirds in OKC for years. It is the symbol of the 45th infantry division, and has been since WWII. (Prior to that, their insignia was the swastika, which was obviously discarded with the rise of Nazi Germany)
M38A1.COM - History of the 45th Infantry Division (Thunderbirds) (http://www.m38a1.com/Misc-MV/thunderbirds.htm)
"After approval of the Commanding General, Eighth Corps Area, and the Chief, National Guard Bureau, the Thunderbird design was officially approved by the War Department and authorized for manufacture and wear. The document approving this design, stated that the Thunderbird was an American Indian symbol signifying "sacred bearer of happiness unlimited"."

How about the
1. OKC Temporary Taxes
2. OKC Socialists
3. OKC Millionaires Who Want My Money to pay for their thing Dribblers
okclee 03-11-2008, 11:42 AM I would like the Thunderbirds exept of the Thunderbird Casino. However if we were to shorten it to "Oklahoma City Thunder" . I like the sound of that.

RoboNerd 03-11-2008, 05:00 PM Hmmm, why not keep the Sonics? Tie it in with the restaurant franchise and we can call the cheerleaders "The Carhops". :bright_id
CuatrodeMayo 03-11-2008, 09:35 PM Portland is SOUTH of Seattle.
Turanacus 03-12-2008, 10:13 AM Oklahoma City 89'ers
Seattle will keep the Sonics name.
Oklahoma City Sonics is not swell. 89'ers is much gooder.
dawgvarik10 03-13-2008, 01:27 AM OKC patrol - You cannot sit here with a strait face and tell me that OKC deserves to have the name Sonics over Seattle. What are you smoking dude? you guys also thinking about ripping off the 76ers name. Jeez what a bunch a biters.
Man, Clay really got you guys drinking his kool aid. Just watch while he gets richer and you get poorer!
BFizzy 03-13-2008, 09:44 AM Does that mean the 49ers also ripped off the 76ers? Oh wait, the 76ers didn't get that name until 1963, so I guess they ripped off the 49ers.
Who cares? It's just a number and it's not even the same number. The Declaration of Independence has nothing to do with the Gold Rush or the Oklahoma Land Run.
Seattle lost the NBA. Get over it.
BFizzy 03-13-2008, 10:03 AM A few names that I wouldn't mind that have ties to Oklahoma City:
Tribe
Bison
Force
Barons
Oilers
Wildcatters
Renaissance
Turanacus 03-13-2008, 03:20 PM Fizz, I like your idea, going with something original, what about something ultra-original like the . . . Oklahoma City Storm ?
because of all our storms and stuff ?
El Gato Pollo Loco!!! 03-13-2008, 04:59 PM ... you guys also thinking about ripping off the 76ers name. Jeez what a bunch a biters....
Where do you see that we want to "steal" the 76'ers name? The 89'ers name comes from the baseball team before they were the Redhawks.
Intrepid 03-13-2008, 05:22 PM Fizz, I like your idea, going with something original, what about something ultra-original like the . . . Oklahoma City Storm ?

I like 'Storm', but that's the name for Seattle's WNBA team.
Dawg, as long as Clay Bennett owns the team, he'll use whatever name he wants. The citizens of Seattle had their chance to support the team. On March 4th, the citizens of OKC showed the world they were ready to support the NBA. Since OKC stepped up to the plate, I would believe we're deserving of the name Sonics. With that being said, I doubt too many people would actually want the name. I'm just trying to illustrate that OKC deserves whatever name is mentioned. Afterall, Clay Bennett, an OKC investor, owns the team and this franchise will be overwhelmingly supported in OKC, unlike they were in Seattle.
Watson410 03-13-2008, 07:41 PM I like 'Storm', but that's the name for Seattle's WNBA team.
So what?!?!?! Who cares about their WNBA team, just look at it as bringin a lil' piece of Seattle with the team. So far, i like Storm, 89ers, and Outlaws.... For sure NOT Tornadoes or Thunderbirds
Intrepid 03-13-2008, 08:51 PM So what?!?!?! Who cares about their WNBA team, just look at it as bringin a lil' piece of Seattle with the team. So far, i like Storm, 89ers, and Outlaws.... For sure NOT Tornadoes or Thunderbirds
So what you're saying is that you wouldn't have a problem with Clay bringing the women's current team name and use it for Oklahoma City's men's team? I think the NBA would have something to say about that.
Also, I don't want a team name that currently belongs to an active team playing the same sport. If "Storm" belonged to a team playing another sport, I might be more supportive.
I also don't really have a problem with the team remaining the Sonics. I understand the arguments against. I just personally don't have an issue with it. I think it was mentioned a long time ago, in a thread far, far away that "Sonics" could be tied into Oklahoma's rich aeronautical and aviation history. I'd rather see that than something tied to cowboys n' indians, oil derricks or the land run.
I'm not that against the Thunderbirds. However, I always picture Lake Thunderbird when I see that name, or the car.

I never thought Lake Thunderbird , but now I will. I always thought of Thunderbird Casino.
I would vote no for the name "Okc Lake Thunderbird Casino"

Thunder doesn't sound so bad to me.
the_Mont 03-13-2008, 10:27 PM I'm really liking the Oklahoma City [oil] Barons. Ties in perfectly to Oklahoma City b/c downtown/Bricktown was initially built using oil money.
:hobbes:
