The Lakers name had nothing to do with the Great Lakes.

The name originates from Minnesota being known as "The Land of 10,000 Lakes", and all actuality, it has 12,000+ lakes (according to the information I found via Google.)

And you're gonna believe google over me?! :ohno:

I was always up for the Thunderbirds idea. Being named after Oklahoma's 45th Infantry Division. Even though they would be named Oklahoma City it would still have a state meaning as well.

I vote for Roughnecks. It's part of our past, present, and hopefully future. Can you see a mascot with a hard hat on, overalls, and no shirt? Black and gold colors. Roughneckettes. Call us the Necks....lol.

I'm still voting for 89ers, then Energy then United. None of these hickish silly names that don't make much sense. Vipers? When is the last time you saw a viper (not a car) tooling around OKC? Thunderbirds? Played out. Roughnecks? Not a chance in you know where.. NBA won't allow it and Bennett is too smart for that. I imagine 89ers, Thunder or Energy are the top contenders for obvious reasons.

FritterGirl
07-09-2008, 08:51 PM
It may have been brought up in another thread, but Bennett still owns 89ers from the pre-Redhaws baseball days. It's personally not my favorite, but I could live with it! If you google okc89ers, you'll pull up the Redhawks Wiki page, and current website page. Chances are, they'll let history rest.

These yee-haws who think they are going to park a domain name won't succeed because all teams go through the main NBA page, so any website for the chosen name will be pushed through the nba site, and not some rogue site.

Yes. Yes I am.

The only information I got from google was the correct phrasing of the Minnesota state slogan. I already knew why the team was named the Lakers. The 12,000 lakes factoid was extra. ;)

Just a few basics:

The NBA is not going to allow any name that has a Native American theme so a name like "The Tribe" is not going to be approved. Thunderbirds does have Native American connections, but it also has roots to the Air Force, the aforementioned 45th Infantry, and Ford Motor Co. There was also a British TV series of the same name (with marionettes!). But the biggest negative is the fact there is a minor league hockey team called the Seattle Thunderbirds. Can you imagine, we take their basketball team and steal their hockey mascot:)

The Oklahoma Outlaws was a USFL team that played one season at Skelly Stadium in the mid-eighties. Superbowl MVP Doug Williams was the quarterback. The big negative with Outlaws is the NBA frowns on negative imagery. For example, the Washington Bullets changed to the Wizards because the league wanted to get away from violence associated with weapons.

Does Barons have negative connotations? It should be obvious that we mean the Oil Barons and not the Robber Barons. Any name you need to explain is not a good name. My biggest issue with the Barons is it is basically pronouced the same as barrens. I can already see some uninformed imbecile (like Charles Barkley) saying "They're called the Barrens because they have nothing".

United is one of the most recognized names in soccer. Sheffield United Football Club got its start in 1889. Around the time we were lining up waiting for the gun to go off. D.C. United is one of the most recognized names in Major League Soccer. (Unless you are a diehard, can anyone even name another team of the top of their head?)

Weather related names:

Oklahoma Twisters was also the name of a minor league pro football team here in the city. It lasted one season before going bankrupt. If memory serves, Rusty Hilger quarterbacked and Mouse Davis was the head coach. The sheer hokeyness of the name Twisters (think dancers not destruction), plus the movie makes this a big negative for me.

Tornados? It's just too obvious.

Thunder? I really can't think of too many negatives. One soccer team in Minnesota and a minor league hockey team in Wichita. One can crank up the AC/DC because you've been... Thunderstruck!!

Thundercats was a mid eighties television cartoon featuring cat like humans. Rumors of a live action or CGI movie has been in the works for some time. It was once thought that the teaser ads for the movie Cloverfield was going to be Thundercats but that was incorrect. The licensing would be a nightmare.

Aviators... I can name two from the state of Oklahoma. They both died in a plane crash and coincidentally we have airports named after them.

89ers is unique but it has history associated to baseball. I don't really have a problem with it except it really isn't a step forward. I would embrace it, the land run is how our state got started and should have been on the state quarter.

Boomers, Roughnecks etc . Not going to happen, the NBA will not want to have any names synonymous with the University.

I just hope we get a name that when it's annouced people go "Great"! instead of "huh???"

One creative poster at TulsaNow Forum - Let's Name the Oklahoma NBA Team! (http://www.tulsanow.org/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=10579) (TulsaNow forum) suggested that the name be, "The Flying Dick Wheel" -- which, as I said in yesterday's blog post showing the team members, might not be such a bad idea ... think of the gut-wrenching terror of opponents when the team's mascot comes near their bench! :dizzy: Let your minds wander as you think about it. :sofa: Just gotta love those Tulsa fans ... :congrats:

Perhaps someone really creative can come up with a blend of SouthsideSooner's suggestion and the above ... we'd be the envy of every NBA team in the country!

You guys need to think more deviously. Every one of these suggestions is going to end in a horrendous name-calling session from our opponents:

OKC Barons = OKC Ass Barons
OKC Bisons = OKC Cows
OKC 89ers = OKC 69ers
OKC Gushers = do I really need to explain this one?
...and on and on and on....

I'm not sure what we should be named, but I don't care much for anything I have heard so far. I agree that I don't like Thunder that much, but it doesn't repulse me like the other names.

Who was it on this forum that suggested OKC Energy? I'm okay with that.

...and on and on and on....

Well... I would't exactly take that personally lol... more like exhibit other team towns (or Seattle's) jealousy lol.

I personally still believe the Marshals, the Outlaws or the Thunder our our best recommendations.

Thundercats was a joke stated by the summer league announcers, if Sports Animal says that name is the rumor, that's all it is, Rumor.

NBA marketing says that 1 week out is optimal for season ticket sales. That means today is the best day to release the new name. One week before they start selling tickets. Rhode may have his prediction, mine is today! Summer League games are coming to a close and they only have one week to push ticket sales.

My prediction on the name: Oklahoma City New Jersey Nets

Yeah, I believe the summer league ends today, so I imagine a Monday press conference might be more appropriate.

Turanacus, I can live with being corrected when wrong, however the whole spoof about the team being called Marshalls was that it was spelled incorrectly with two L's as in the department store. The URL purchased that linked to the NBA that all the gullible ones believed was the team name was spelled incorrectly "marshalls". The ones who were bright enough to catch it, indeed saw it spelled wrong.
