View Full Version : It's official! What do you want to name the team?
TornadoesFan 07-07-2008, 04:35 PM Well, this answers one question. It looks like OKC will be wearing generic NBA jerseys during summer league. This will buy more team for the team to get a name and colors.

namellac 07-07-2008, 05:02 PM If the new owners are smart, and if they want to bolster fan support, they'll at least have a "VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE" name contest. Or at least make it appear that the fans are voting for the name.
CCOKC 07-07-2008, 05:48 PM I really don't think there is time for that now. Listening to Mark Rodgers this afternoon he seems to think the name has already been chosen and is going through NBA approval now. I tend to agree with him. I don't think it will be too much longer before we find out what the name is.

Bleh. Don't like it.
TornadoesFan 07-07-2008, 09:21 PM Hmmm. I wonder if KMSooners is William Wiggins (or friends with him)? Just wondering since he owns OKCBarons.com.
Intrepid 07-07-2008, 09:25 PM Let me rephrase my comments....
The photoshopping performed is tremendous.
I just don't care for Barons as a potential team name.
FritterGirl 07-07-2008, 09:28 PM Barons is a great concept, but c'mon folks, it's just not the time or place for it.
Given what much of the US feels about OK (that we are the great Raiders/Robber barons from the west), do we really want to perpetuate that with our team name?
Toadrax 07-07-2008, 09:31 PM Hmmm. I wonder if KMSooners is William Wiggins (or friends with him)? Just wondering since he owns OKCBarons.com.
"Bill" Wiggins is an attorney who is a member of the ocapl(association of petroleum landmen).
For those who are curious. Funny that someone pushing the barons name would be in oil...

And nice job with the photoshop, but 95 dollars for a ticket?!
Joe Kimball 07-08-2008, 01:10 AM I just saw it suggested that "Thundercats" might be the new team name. The domains "oklahomacitythundercats.com" and "okcthundercats.com" have been parked.

Personally, I hope I'm wrong.
cedbled 07-08-2008, 01:26 AM first off, if you follow the links, you'll eventually come across the original article, where it refers to the sports commentators calling the summer league team thundercats, among many other JOKE names...
secondly, thinks for a second about the copyright issues with the old cartoon.
NOPE, we still don't know what the real name\colors are yet....
on a sidenote: is the waiting to debut the name\colors slowly creeping towards the realm of counter-productivity?

Well, nor did we. Note my use of "might". :)
Counter-productive could well refer to the parking of domain names, especially if it costs money (I haven't really an idea about how that goes).
Also---I wouldn't put it past PBC, L.L.C. to deal with handling compensation for copyright, were this the team's name. Granted, a "free" name would be my first choice had I just helped lay down 45 million, but....
n8ison 07-08-2008, 10:11 AM my $.02
Here are some names I haven't heard discussed...
1)OKC Aftermath
(I understand that a lot of the weather related names will be passed on because of the negative connotations they're attached to, but I thought this had a nice ring to it).
2)OKC Stampede
3)OKC Rattlers
With that said some of my favorites that have already been mentioned include:
The Outlaws
The T-Birds
and maybe The Aviators
(but keep in mind that both of our airports are named after men who died in airplane crashes).
OKCMallen 07-08-2008, 11:27 AM Someone on an OU football board seems to think it's going to be Outlaws...I can't imagine the image-conscious and PC NBA allowing that, but who knows.
NativeOkie 07-08-2008, 02:00 PM Hey photoshop some other names for people to see.
You are skewing the poll results. With a terrible name.
OKCisOK4me 07-08-2008, 04:48 PM I'm down to 70% Barons & the reason being is this:
With The Thunder you could market that so easy. Think of the intro...dark arena, strobe lights for lightning effect, then rumbling thunder. After this the team runs out and they start playing Thunderstruck by AC/DC!
betts 07-08-2008, 05:24 PM I heard today that it won't be Barons...that the NBA doesn't want any names with negative connotations, like (robber) Barons. It's just a rumor, of course.
NativeOkie 07-08-2008, 05:49 PM Betts,
I hope your right.

Word going around OUInsider is that the team is going to be called the "Oklahoma City Marshalls." Don't know how much stock to put in that rumor. Also, the supposed colors are red, white & blue.
The name I can live with, but I hope we don't go with red, white and blue. How would that make this team different from the other 10+ teams with that color scheme?

I could live with that name too.
jbrown84 07-08-2008, 06:09 PM I like that name. Mascot could be a sheriff.
betts 07-08-2008, 06:13 PM I don't know if I like it, but it's certainly tolerable. Although I do remember not liking the times when the Honeybees dressed up in western wear and danced to C&W songs. But again, please no large headed humanoid mascot. They're the worst.
CrimsonOberon 07-08-2008, 06:17 PM Alright, now it sounds like the colors are going to be "Black and Vegas Gold."
I hope that is the case. I could grow to like Marshalls, but I don't want to join the other half dozen teams with red, white and blue color schemes. Black and gold would be sweet. It would set OKC apart.
cedbled 07-08-2008, 06:17 PM mann, i'm tryin to like the Marshals, i'm really tryin. But that red\white\blue, pleeeease, i hope that's not true.
I don't want to be Americana's lil apple-pie team, that's so corny!!!
Not as much merchandise is gonna move outside OKC with that color combo.
Every other team (and there are many) with that combo have already cornered the market on acceptable taste.
I just know we're gonna screw that up if they do this.

where are u getting this stuff from?
CrimsonOberon 07-08-2008, 06:22 PM where are u getting this stuff from?
OUInsider.
Once again, I don't know how much stock to put in these rumors. They could be guesses, but these things do tend to get out before they are officially announced. Of course, some of this could just be wishful thinking. Especially about the colors.
I won't go as far as to say I wouldn't support the team if they used red, white and blue, because that isn't true, at all. However, I hope they (Clay and co.) think further outside the box.
I want OKC to stand out from the pack, not adopt the same colors as so many others.
cedbled 07-08-2008, 06:24 PM maybe i'm lookin at the wrong forum over there, but it looks like just some regular people talkin about possibilities like they are over here.....
but your previous post where i quoted you sounded like some new rumor info just came down.

I apologize if I worded it in a way that made it sound like I had some official news. I'm just the same as everyone else. I have no inside sources, and I am just waiting on pins and needles to find out anything concrete about the naming issue.
You are right that most of the people on message boards just discuss the possibilities, but there have been times when people over there have been proven right with time. Whether it's someone coming on to say that some trouble was brewing with regards to Willie Warren the day before any word came out (which later turned out not to have involved Willie directly), or someone giving us a heads up on something that later turns out to bear some fruit, there have been enough times where those people have been proven right for me to give them the benefit of the doubt.
But like I said, I have to admit that there is a part of me that hopes that the rumor of the team using black and gold is true. Honestly, red, white and blue is just too generic.http://www.okctalk.com/images/icons/icon9.gif
cedbled 07-08-2008, 06:34 PM i dig it... hey, i just registered over there, is it usually a while before someone can access the main board?

You have to be a paying member to read the main board. Owen Field, Lloyd Noble (Mens & Womens), O'Connell's and all the others are free boards.

$95 for a ticket in section 105 would actually be pretty low. Section 105 is near mid-court on the sideline that the center-court logo faces. Those are pretty sweet seats that could easily go for twice that.

"The Katrinas" would be a perfect fit for New Orleans, but that doesn't make it a good name.

Might want to learn the correct spelling of "Marshals" first.
spraycan 07-10-2008, 08:24 AM I don't understand the name Barons for this team. Oil Barons? Seems sort of Tulsa-ish. Perhaps its my Tulsa location. We had a motorcycle gang in the 60's by that name.
Tornadoes and Thunder are kids soccer teams, Marshall's is a dept. store and Vortex is Spandex-lite. Surely OKC has more cool than what I'm seeing. Maybe you could call an executive from Kia and scoop up some of their unused sedan names.
My memories of OKC relate to its weather, its flat terrain and its neverending wind. Although it is tempting to use oil or history as a name source those are negatives in the long run. Oil is cyclical and unpopular. History is subjective and largely ignored.
A contemporary name befitting your renaissance attitude would be the thing. Just a suggestion from the hinterland.

Turanacus 07-10-2008, 10:21 PM We should name them the OKC Chicago Bulls ??? Come on, I need some support on this . . . .
crouchingliger 07-10-2008, 10:45 PM It probably means nothing, but I found it interesting that the website okcslickers.com is registered to a design company in oklahoma city, Staplegun Design. Maybe they've submitted a design that's in the running?
crouchingliger 07-10-2008, 10:49 PM With Slickers, Tulsans could call them the "City Slickers" and feel a sense of ownership that the team isn't an "Oklahoma City" team. And Oklahoma City peeps could call them the "Slickers" and feel like it's OKC's own team. It's a win-win for everyone.

I really like the Thunderbirds. Not T-birds, just thunderbirds. Use Native American imagery to both represent our state and to honor our tribes.
