We often drove from Midwest City to Ouy Lin's Chinese restaurant at 12th and N. Penn. We always loved the food but our favorite memory of the place is the night two waitresses got in an argument and pretty much ignored our table. We left a tip of two cents!

I took Karate from before the Samurai was open, and he was one bad dude. Not only was he a highly ranked black belt, but he was incredibly strong. There was no need for security when he was around. There was one other Karate instructor I had that was unbelievable in marital arts, Jack Hwang. I saw him take on 7 people in a bar once, no contest. within 3 minutes he was the only one standing.
There were also some others that worked there in the early Samurai days that had trained under him, they just didn't advertise the security they had in place. A bunch of us from Sound Warehouse next door hung out there quite a bit when he first opened up the bar area, before opening it up to the restaurant side. Rick from Charlie's and I worked to get the big screen working after he bought it, we were paid in drinks and food. Some of the late night going back into the kitchen with some of the cooks was some of the best food that I have had. I didn't go there as much once it became popular and became mostly bar.

My late wife and I enjoyed "El Patio" while we were dating and when we came home on leave from the Navy. I thought it was around 5th and S. Walker though. When our leave was over, we bought three or four quarts of their salsa and took it back to Maryland. There was no Mexican food in that area. This was in 1965-1968 and there weren't any fast food Mexican or Mexican restaurants at all. Dianna made tacos and enchiladas and of course we used the salsa until we ran out. We did find a fairly good "El Paso" brand substitute in the commissary.

Ann's is still there ate there just last week, still pretty good.

Soonergeezer,
I like spicy things and their regular salsa was pretty warm, it's the only thing my wife didn't like about Zamudio's, but I loved it.
C. T.
I worked out in MWC in the late 70s, and I probably ate at Zamudio's 3 times a week. When Mr and Mrs Zamudio were alive the place was unbeatable for Mexican. They served fried ice cream, it was one of my favorite desserts all time. Everything fresh and homemade, Damn I would kill to be sitting there eating chips and salsa waiting on my order.

I can say that every time I ate there the food was excellent. I also ate at the one in Ada and it was just as good. I really miss that place more than anywhere I've ever eaten.

I passed NW 30 & Classen last week and noticed the entire southwest
corner had been razed.

The Blue Goose was there for years.

I'm pretty sure that the man who started Nino's came from the El Chico on Paseo (and maybe El Charrito, even). And that was our progression with Mexican food - El Charrito downtown, then El Chico on Paseo, and then Nino's on the south side. We tried to go to whatever Nino's Mr. Nino was working at (sorry, I never knew that gentleman's name). They were always good. Unfortunately, we haven't found a Mexican restaurant in ten years that is as good to us as those restaurants were - we just make TexMex at home and endure.

Is it my imagination (or have I gotten crabbier the older I get - YES) but does it seem to anyone else that the TexMex (or OklaMex) places have gone NUTS with cilantro?? I just can't stand going out to eat TexMex any more because of it.

There's a bunch of yellow tape on the property around the vacant Ninos restaurant on south Western. Did the property sell?

Yes, sold to a local investor last months.

No building or demo permits yet, though. No idea what the plans may be.

Old northwest side boy here, missing Larry's Steakhouse (and the platewarmers), Nicolosi's, and Sparky's drive in S of 23rd and Meridian. Some of those southside places ring a bell, but they were clear across town!

Sean Cummings Irish Pub and Der Dutchman.

RM,
That was the original name, then it became Zuider Zee. I wasn't aware that it was owned/started by Mr. Adair of cafeteria fame.
C. T.

Oklahoma City restaurant chain have improved after a name change.
Jerry Adair, owner of Adair's Inc., changed both his Der Dutchman specialty seafood restaurants to "Zuider Zee" in early January.

The name was changed "to create interest in the market," Adair said. "Zuider Zee is a good, catchy name that has good public approval."

Zuider Zee was the name of Adair's popular franchise at 3509 NW 58th St. from 1967 to 1970. Adair discontinued the franchise in 1970 and changed the name to Der Dutchman.

SamW,
My favorite item at The Patio was the Schnitzel. A burger patty topped with chili, cheese, chopped onions and a fried egg, with French fries and baked beans on the side. And all of the long time employees. Remember the sign stating how long each employee had worked there?

First, forgive me for being late on the scene, but you guys have have posted so many amazing memories, I just had to join in. The property I believe that was the Will Rogers center had so many venues located in it that it was hard to keep track back then. "Fritzi's" I believe was one such establishment along with other interesting named businesses. One such place was a briefly-lived beer bar called Jaggzz owned by a guy who also owned "Up the Alley" on Campus Corner. I mention it only because of the music acts that David Box was booking at those and others like Kelley's and G.O.T. U2, Huey Lewis and the News, Joe Ely, Stray Cats, the Talking Heads, Iggy Pop, Dead Kennedy's, Joe King Carrasco, Max and the Makeups, among other. It 's just kind of wild thinking back to the choices that you had. Also thanks to the folks for reminding me why it was an exciting day when dad would take me and my brother to John A Browns in Capitol Hill or downtown to T.G & Y. In the middle of the tall buildings or a new Shepard Mall. Thanks guys for stirring up those great memories from 1965 and on.

Does anyone remember J.J. Muggs at NW Expressway and MacArthur? It was owned by the same company that owned Steak & Ale and was in the building that is now Charleston's. This would have been 1986 or so.

They had some really good hamburgers and a great beer list. I think it was open for at least 3 or 4 years.

This was from the grand opening in 1985. It was where Charleston's is now located; I went many times:

The 80s were all about theme restaurants.

Most of them did not last very long.

Their Bacon Cheeseburger and Swiss Mushroom Burger were outstanding and I went there often. I'm not sure when it closed but believe that I came back from college one day and it was closed up. Probably '87 or '88.

I believe Charleston's merely modified the building that was constructed for JJ Mugg's. Not sure if there was anything between those two restaurants as I left OKC in 1989.

If not submitted, I would add the Harry Bears that used to be on Mosteller drive. The place had a good atmosphere, good food and an attentive waitstaff. I can remember driving over there from Rose state Jr. College in the early 80's just for lunch. The place never dissapointed.

And these days, Sonics burgers taste like soy, and even Chili's is not so good with burgers any more. The choices are few for a decent lunch in OK these days.

The interesting thing about. Burger chef was at one time they had MORE locations than McDonald's. Sadly the were bough into the whole Hardee's/Carls Junior/whatever it is now morass.

Like Sonic, McDonald's has forgotten what it was like to have competition. Their product quality has dropped, their customer service has declined their prices continue to rise and they still can't seem to keep a working shake Machine.

A subtle reminder WHY we need competition!

McDonalds is coming out with a new burger called the Big Arch. They are introducing it in Canada first before it comes to the US. Also a Chicken Big Mac is coming. And for all McDonalds downfalls they always seem to be busy.

They're always busy because there's lots of people like my wife and I that would prefer to stop on the way home for quarter pounders with cheese or Big Macs and fries than any other option. And we've had pretty much all the other options.

I remember the Arch Deluxe at McDonald's in the 90s. It was good but it didn't last long. But man I like to splurge every 6 or 7 months or so and get a Big Mac. I regret it about an hour later and then the regret wears off after about 6 or 7 months then I do it again.

The Big Arch is not the same as the Arch Deluxe. The Big Arch will have two quarter pound patties. And I say the same thing about eating McDonalds. Why does it taste so good going down and so regrettable an hour later.
