My kind of guy....El Jalisco....Margarita.....Dos Equis (XX)...Si????
papaOU 04-11-2009, 10:30 PM Charlie's Chili, some friends parents owned it. We spent quite a bit of time there. It was behind the former gas station on 63rd.
I don't remember a Stampede there, when would that have been? I remember Confetti's, The Zoo, The Plum and a few others but no cowboy bar there. I don't think it had the ceiling height to be a two story space in there.
CHARLIE'S CHILI!!! THAT'S IT!! Went there in the early to mid-80's. The last bar of my wilder days.
Redskins/General 04-12-2009, 07:18 AM Jalisco, Saltio, and Jaurez come to mind. My favorite was the chicken
ench. in sour cream Or the big schooners of beer
"Jaurez Special" with your choice of chicken or beef taco!!
Prunepicker 04-12-2009, 04:28 PM There was a bar at that corner and I mean right on the corner. Southwest
corner of 63RD and May. Know the name of it?:Smiley051
Wasn't it called Charlie's? It's been several things.
Prunepicker 04-12-2009, 10:07 PM I was surfing the 'Net trying to find a menu from El Charrito's. No luck.
However, I found some restaurants I don't believe have been mentioned.
Applewood’s - they went down fast after they moved.
Reuben Rugby’s
The Magic Pan
Domino’s - Where Flip's is now. Good burgers.
Pick’s Fine Foods
Chi Chi’s - Prunette and I liked the fried ice cream.
Godfather’s Pizza
Fred Gangs Meat Market - Really good!
Bonaparte's - A favorite drive in. Also in Shepherd Mall.
Split T - More great burgers.
Orin's Pizza
Hemi's Pizza
Hotsy Hot Dogs
Pizza Planet
Sussy's
My Pi
Butterfield's
papaOU 04-12-2009, 11:34 PM PIZZA PLANET!!!!! Only place that had my favorite pizza!! SHRIMP AND ONION!!!

Now it's true you did go to Capitol Hill...........Sorry
I make 'em at home sometimes. A friend didn't believe it was sold in any type of commercial establishment.
As we were checking out the cashier went "Are you making a shrimp and onion pizza? I haven't had one of those since Pizza Planet closed." My friend cussed me all the way home.An eatery I have not seen mentioned was the El Patio, on S.W.5th between Walker and Hudson. Talk about good greasy Mexican food!
Now Mexican places tell you to be careful because the plate is hot. But those good old Mexican places you could hear and see the grease sizzle!
CarltonsKeeper 04-15-2009, 08:45 AM That was good Mexican grub! Across the street from the Post Office! What was the one on walker at 5th st., LaRoca????
CarltonsKeeper 04-15-2009, 09:04 AM There was a bar at that corner and I mean right on the corner. Southwest corner of 63RD and May. Know the name of it?:Smiley051
Don't remember that one, but I use to live in the Rafters Club at s.w. 55th and Penn and the Twilight club across the street on 55th!! How about Ginny's Pub at the south end of the shopping center on s. penn just south of Borthicks furniture!

I alway's thought that the plate is hot was bon appetite in Spanish.

Si!
Prunepicker 04-15-2009, 09:44 AM I rarely if ever went inside a bar. But I remember a few that were popular
or on main road we drove.
The Balcony on NW 10 and east of Council. I heard they wouldn't let you in
if you were wearing jeans.
Filthy McNasty's in Paseo, which later became the Jail or vice versa. I went
there once, only because I was under age.
The Jail West on Council.
The Esquire on NW 10th and May on the SE corner
The Blue Goose on 28th & N. Classen?
The Hi-Lo east of the Classen Circle. I played a gig there once.
The GQ @ 16th & N Broadway. Gigged there, too.
The Blue Note on NW 23rd & Robinson.
The Tee-Pee just east of I-35 near NE 23rd. It was in a bowling alley.
Have you ever noticed that most bars have "The" in their name?
Prunepicker 04-15-2009, 09:56 AM When I was a kid it seemed like every bowling alley had a bar.
Did any of you hang out in them?
Bulldog 04-15-2009, 01:14 PM What about Cedar Palace at I-40 and Scott Street? Did you play there?
papaOU 04-15-2009, 02:22 PM Don't remember that one, but I use to live in the Rafters Club at s.w. 55th and Penn and the Twilight club across the street on 55th!! How about Ginny's Pub at the south end of the shopping center on s. penn just south of Borthicks furniture!
I went to the Twilight Club during the mid and late '70's. That was a rough place. Everyone was either going to prison, had warrants or just got out. And that was just the women. No kidding about being rough. I hung at a bar at 29th and Penn but I don't remember the name. Had rooms in the back for rent. It was almost as rough as the Twilight. Even made several trips to the Canadian Club.
In my early drinking days it was;
The Sooner Brodcast System (OKC and Norman)
The Fallout Shelter (Norman)
The South 40 (Norman)
After the Gold Rush(okc)
The Long Branch(okc).
Charlie Browns(okc)
Yes I did spend time at The Red Dog.
(Don't tell Southside Girl! It would ruin my spotless image!)

Went to the Canadian Club a time or two but usually ended up at the Rose Glo on S.W. 29th or Mickey's Last Chance on Newcastle Road. I never really had any trouble in the Twilight Club. The Tequila club in packin' town was where I would get my head popped a few times but the old Exchange Lounge (use to be next door east of Langston's) was the worst place around there. The Charter Club was the only half way Classy place down there. I think it was the Mint at 44th and S. Penn I frequented also. The Mai Kai is still going strong across the street from there.
CarltonsKeeper 04-15-2009, 02:59 PM Anyone remember the "Coppertop Cafe/bar/service station" on South Robinson on the west side of the street at 10th, last business before you went under the railroad bridege! The guy that owned it was a good friend of mine and my next door neighbor!!

Don't know if it's true or not, but I HEARD that Gen/64 did a little light "Pole Dancing" at the "Red Dog" back in his wilder day's! What won't this guy do? Hed's beginning to kind of scare me!!
Prunepicker 04-15-2009, 05:18 PM What about Cedar Palace at I-40 and Scott Street? Did you play there?
No. I didn't.

BUT........BUT, we were not together..............:ohno:
I never really got to know anybody at the Twilight. Didn't want. I went with some guys I worked with.
My #1 hangout was in Norman. Walter Mitty's. Wish I could get at least half of they money I spent there.
twinkles 04-15-2009, 08:40 PM Ooooh. Walter Mitty's had a Ladies Night with male strippers. Available for private parties. At least, that's what I heard.
twinkles 04-15-2009, 08:43 PM Yes I did spend time at The Red Dog.
HEY! When were you doggin'?? My husband's old band used to play at the Red Dog some.
papaOU 04-16-2009, 12:02 AM HEY! When were you doggin'?? My husband's old band used to play at the Red Dog some.
Did he and his band play at the Red Dog the same night that Walter Mitty's had ladies night? Nudge, nudge, wink, wink............
Prunepicker 04-16-2009, 05:51 PM HEY! When were you doggin'? My husband's old band used to play at the Red
Dog some.
Was the band Punkin? If not, what was it.
ahem, I played in classy bands so we never played the 'Dog. Besides we
played the Tulsa scene as well as some of the classy dives in Kansas and
Iowa.
You're thinking, "classy dives in Iowa?" I'm still trying to figure it out.
papaOU 04-16-2009, 07:03 PM Was the band Punkin? If not, what was it.

Kansas? Iowa? Those were "dry" states when you and Mr.Haney were travelin' together.
twinkles 04-16-2009, 07:07 PM Did he and his band play at the Red Dog the same night that Walter Mitty's had ladies night? Nudge, nudge, wink, wink............
His days at the skanky dives were over when we got married. I know how those floozies look at the band ..... heck, the way they look at ANYBODY they think might have a job.
I went to Walter Mitty's twice - once for a private Christmas party, and once for a bachelorette party. Holy crap, that was some eye-opening entertainment. The women were, you know, WANTON. I just assumed the dancers were gay. LOL Not that there is anything wrong with that.
Was the band Punkin? If not, what was it. He says he vaguely remembers Punkin. I think you might be a little older than we are. His Red Dog band was Tools - playing there in the early 80's.
What were your bands?? I'm assuming there has been more than one.
twinkles 04-16-2009, 07:10 PM More info from Mr. Twinkles - they played the Long Branch, too, and some bar on I-40 and Scott Street that is called Fantasy Island, now. Can't remember what the name of it was back then.
papaOU 04-16-2009, 07:18 PM I quit going to the strip-bars when they made it against the law to fully undress. Loved to watch what some of them could do in order to pick-up a rolled dollar bill without using hands or teeth.

I don't remember the names of the bands as much as the players (I reserve
the term musician to musicians (lol)
The band I was with, that made any impact in the early 70's, was Anotar.
We (thought) we were the next Yes and were out of Tulsa.
In some respects we were an early "heavy metal" band but not anything
like AC/DC. We covered Deep Purple, Blue Oyster Cult, REO Speed Wagon,
YES, Pink Floyd and that ilk.
We never played in OKC. We were big at Whisker's and The Wharf as far
as Tulsa was concerned. I don't remember the Kansas places but "One
Block West" in Kansas City comes to mind. It was one block west of the
state line and the drinking age was 18. The bar would shut down like there
was a raid at 2am! No quarter. You were out of there. I think they'd been
raided too many times.
We should have had the agent say we were from Texas and that our name
was Drugs. You can imagine the headlines now. "Drugs from Texas!"

I'd use one of those trash picker uppers. You know, the ones with a spike that you stab the trash with.
Prunepicker 04-16-2009, 07:36 PM He says he vaguely remembers Punkin. I think you might be a little older than

Punkin' was really a mid 70's cover band. They were pretty good did the
early Steely Dan tunes pretty good.
I was with a band that played the 'Dog'. In Oklahoma, back in the day, only
a hotel/motel could have a dance floor.
We'll, as luck would have it, we were all in this little room, of which there
were probably 2 others, waiting to play. We found out that we were in the
"hotel". There was a mattress - that you'd find at the county jail -don't
ask- with a stolen table and lamp from an apartment. You didn't dare sit on
the mattress- don't ask...
Prunepicker 04-16-2009, 07:40 PM Hey Twinkles,
I hope I answered your questions.
Other than that, I'm totally clueless!
Ask your husband if he remembers the "Guitar Shack" owned by a great
guitarist, Bill Landrum. And the guy that worked for him, Robin Venters.
Of course, he'd remember George Ryan at "Driver's Music". He may remember
Kenny and Lucille Driver. They were truly the musicians best friend.
Prunepicker 04-16-2009, 07:54 PM I'd use one of those trash picker uppers. You know, the ones with a spike
that you stab the trash with.
Oh good grief, memories are starting to haunt...
OUCH!
papaOU 04-16-2009, 07:54 PM I was with a band that played the 'Dog'. In Oklahoma, back in the day, only

Don't know about the 90's but even into the mid-'80's you still had to have a room for rent (overnight stay) in order to have dancing. Some joints would really get hot about customers dancing! Even if it was just a chick enjoy'n herslf and the music.

I didn't use a trash picker upper - I'm saying if I DID, that is what I'd use. I'm very practical.

Pulliam BBQ Sauce (http://www.64knights.com/recipes/recipe_46.htm)
I think an important part of the recipe, that I remember, was keeping it in
large bottles in the window in the sunlight. Maybe he was aging it!
twinkles 04-19-2009, 11:18 PM I'll keep that in mind. The aging. Wonder if the BBQ sauce was more potent in the summer sun than the winter??
The only scary part is - I was a child, so I'm sure I didn't have the hot. I'm looking at the recipe, wondering if I should change it or not or just go for broke and hope for the best.

Cutback or omit the Dijon Mustard and Cayenne Pepper and it should be fine. Don't think it would change the taste just reduce or eliminate the hot.

My experience is to always start with the original recipe and go from there.
Otherwise, you'll never know if you like it or what, if anything, you need to do
to make it to your liking.

bowtieguy 04-20-2009, 10:18 PM I am surprised that no one mentioned the Ritz or the Saratoga Station of the 80's. Both proved pretty good to me after my first divorce. After 15 years of marriage they were quite an eye opener to me.
