None other than John F. Kennedy, he was in the parking lot at the S.E. corner !! I was there too !!

HEY: we're all trying to put our minds to task however, we forgot about the original Grant/Southside Drive-Inn hangout.....WESTERN DIP......That (in the middle to late fifties and early sixties) was THE place to go. However, since there weren't a lot of places on the Southside of town they (the kids) would go to places like Karp's, Bixlers, Hollies, 15th st. Del Rancho, and there was one out on Newcastle road (can't remember the name)...then Potter's was built and there became an insurgence of drive-Inn's....."Crappiehead" don't you remember Country Club (D&D) being called "Hillcrest Drive-Inn"?......And, Coit's along with Hollies were kind of neutral places at tht time......

1. Anyone remember the name of the Shoe Salesman from Rothchild's?
2. How about the T.G.&Y. Mascot and what was the brand name of their company products.
3. Crappiehead:.....what was the name of the Grille we went to in Grant Square Shopping Center????? Jewel Box Florist was next door to it....
4. Crappiehead:.......do you remember the portable building that we went to lunch at across Penn from Grant? I remember Hot Dogs, and Frito Chili Pies were like 10 and 15 cents each......Health department made them move when we were in the eighth grade.....
5. Last but not least, I have a 1965 marching band trophy won by Grant...Anyone from '65 want it??????

That was Dairy Boy (one of the first)! At that time it was owned by Hansen/Atlee Dairy on South Penn about the 1900 block. Leonard Hansen and Harry Atlee are both dead now. The other eatery was the Burger Bar in Grant Square shopping center. Do you remember the Red Barn restaurant close to the old RX at about 53rd and Penn, great big Red Barn shaped building with white trim. Only there about one year......

That was Dairy Boy (one of the first)! At that time it was owned by Hansen/Atlee Dairy on South Penn about the 1900 block. Leonard Hansen and Harry Atlee are both dead now. The other eatery was the Burger Bar in Grant Square shopping center. Yes, the ammonia chillers work on the same theory as a modern day condensing unit, but what your referring to is what they used to keep their cream and ice cream cool, also put out an unusual oder, very distinct. The Pool Hall was the most lucrative business I remember being there and yes I knew Dr. Rosin and dated Opper's daughter a few time's and can't even remember her name. Opper was also at 29th and S. Western next door to Ellis Hudson's (Frank Hudson's Dad) Pharmacy. His partner at that time was Woody Olson who was my doctor for a period of time. I'm sure Opper is dead, I know Woody Olson is dead and I read where Rosin (who was also my Dr.) past away about 3 or 4 years ago. Nope and nope. I was amongst the lucky few who didn't have to go to because
the town we moved to, from Prunepickerland, didn't have Kindergarten. My 1st

Norwood went to Tahlequah (Northestern) and coached at the college level. He was fairly successful there also....

"Old-Timer's" disease comes and goes....right now, it's gone for a while...I can remember selling roses on the street corners when I was in Jr. High. These "Hustlers" would get kids to stay out ALL DAY on Saturday selling roses and they would pay us a percentage of what we sold. Well, I convinced them to let me go last on the corner I would get.... so, when everyone else was out of the truck and set up (8th grader) i talked the guy into giving me ALL of the roses that were left to sell but, i wanted to go Northside...He didn't know OKC so he agreed...I had him take me to Casady Square and set up up my tent. When he left, I marked the roses Double for a couple of hours then had a half-price sell (original price) and sold out in about 2 hours.....Made about 30-35 dollars that day.....big money in 1959......

Do you remember the Blue wall plaques you could order from the comic books? I order a set ( though my mom was going to kill me) and they cost 13 cents each...you were to sell them for .35 cents or 3/ 1.00. Since no one else was welling them anywhere I marked mine .50 cents or 3/1.00. Sold the first order in one day. I doubled my order and went to work. There were "Jesus Loves me all over the neighborhood" (at 50 cents). Made close to $100.00 on those... that was really BIG Money.

Did any of you guys hand out hand bills?. I made a deal with Bob Poole to put handbills out from 36th st. to 51st. from Agnew to Independence. I hired other kids to hand them out and starting doing mine...I was almost through with my area when Bob pulled up and took me to where the other kids had thrown their handbills in the creek. I handed out handbills til 1:00 a.m. that night....Never did like having employees.....

I can't believe it!

I LOVE the OKC Memories thread, and have so enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts and memories of our wonderful city!

My husband and I both grew up as "southsiders" but have since defected and moved north to satisfy our desire for an historic home. It doesn't hurt, either, that we are now each 5 and 7 minutes respectively from our jobs.

My husband's late father was a family practice physician on the southside and one of the founding doctors of what was once called South Community Hospital (since rechristened Integris Southwest).

I graduated high school in 1978 and my husband graduated in 1973 (Christian Heritage Academy and U.S. Grant)

Here are some "southside" memories that some of you may share:

- Al & Dub's drive in on SW 44th (the "Grant hangout"). This was really more in my older siblings' eras - the early 60's. I believe Wilkerson's was the "Capitol Hill hangout". In those days, it was kind of a "greasers vs. the socs"

- When the 14 Flags drive in was at the end of the world, or so it seemed?

- Crystal's Pizza after games.

- Cruising McDonald's and Sonic on SW 59th Street until all hours

- The Park Terrace Theatre (and El Rancho Sanchez, right next door)

- Parking lot carnivals at Reding Shopping Center (now the Integris SW parking lot)

- Christmas shopping at Sears at 44th and Western

- When Crossroads Mall was brand new and THE place to be!

- The tragic Sirloin Stockade murders. I remember a big Help Wanted sign going up in front of the restaurant a couple of weeks after the murders. it was a portable sign on the side of a large plastic steer

- The opening of the "Big TG&Y" as we called it at I-240 & Penn. I was there as a small child with my older sisters, when "Dandy" Don Meredith of the Dallas Cowboys was there signing autographs.

- The opening of Arlan's Department Store at 44th & S. Western. It later became Target. Debbie Reynolds was there with Agnes Moorehead of Bewitched fame. Debbie was married to Harry Karl, who was the owner of Arlan's. If I remember correctly, he went bankrupt.

- Shakey's Pizza at SW 56th & Western.

- "Northside" seemed like a different world. Anyone remembering venturing to drive down the "Twilight Zone" street? (Actually Carey Place in Gatewood).

- A certain "mansion" that the brave drove by somewhere out my Draper Lake and scared each other silly with urban legends.

I'm sure I'll think of more, and hope to hear more from some of you.

However, I have never heard anything BAD about Dodson's Cafeteria....I asked Joe Dodson what he did different to make his Green Beans taste so good....Simply Squeezed Fresh Lemon Juice.......Hmmm.............It works..........What does anyone else have to say about Dodson's Cafeteria...After All, They were a mainstay to many of us weren't they??? We talke about the GREASY FRIES and BURGERS but Only praises about Dodson's.....My Mother-In-Law really used to like to eat there.....

I don't remember Dodson's at 44th and Western, but I do remember Adair's. We
ordered Thanksgiving from them in 1968!

Dodson's was great. We didn't get to eat there very often but when we did
I liked it. There was something about a kid getting to pick what he wanted to
eat and leaving the vegetables behind.

When did Dodson's open? 1962?

After the incredible get together, I drove around the southside. 63rd and Villa
was different than I remembered. Jody, of Jude and Jody, or, Jude, of Jude and
Jody may have lived on the corner, but, the second house north of 63rd is where
I remember his drive way being on Villa. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Hillcrest used to have 'annexes' during 63-65. They were temporary WWII
buildings. I stayed in them for a couple of years.

I was in Hillcrest during 69-71 and had forgot about those annexes till you mentioned it.They moved them out in 70 I believe.

I had a black lady for a teacher in 4th but for the life of me cannot remember her name, had Hulgan in 5th, Crittenden in 6th.

It tore up so many old trees and houses, I remember my dad loading us kids up and we went chasing it.

Dodson's opened in the early 50's next door and to the east of Langston dept store on 25th street in the heart of Capital Hill. They were in a basement. We did all our shopping in Langston's bargain basement. The had an old time wooden machine you could stand on which would X-ray your feet and let you look at all the bones in them and how your new shoes were going to fit!!

Anyone remember WEE-WOE roaming the streets of Capital Hill business district! He would chase you for blocks if you called him that...That was about 50 years ago, maybe I'm gettin' toooooooooo old.......

How about Coot's Convenience and Meat (underage Beer) and the Hickory House next to Coits, Hogans restaurant at Virginia and Main. Stereo City and the FOUR track players. I still have some plus the tapes. Yount's Super Marker and Hollie's Variety Store. Rancho drug and the barber shop at the south end. Massey's auto accessories still operating. V&H Muffler, Sonny the owner died and left it to the midget Billy Jack who is now dead. Griff's Hamburger's, 1st 15 cent burgers in town. Zorro Taco on S. Western and the Tastee Freeze on 44th between RAncho and Blackwelder later to become Los Taco's who since moved. Potters drive-In come as you are - dine in your car. Joe Bass owner of Little Joe's boot shop now deceased but owned by another little Joe not related, which is next door to the old Rodeo Theater. How about the AGnew Theater and Agnew Skating Rink. First location of Moore's cycle's selling Mustang's and Cushman Eagles, first at Linwood and Blackwelder, then south robinson and finally west main. Sussy's mobile pizza wagon. Beverly's chicken in the rough on 23rd and classen. The Daily Oklahoman paper drops, one on Barnes just east of Penn 44 Bowling Alley, another at s.w 37th on robinson. Luttrell's barber shop, george, carroll potter, plase (plaz) Goode, and Wallace the shoe shine man. Cattlemen's Drive in on exchange, later a Bar-B-Q joint. The Rancher's Daughter and the Sugar Shack in Bixler's not exactly south though. Bob DEnnis and his Dennis donuts "The Big Swing is to Dennis Donuts." Cafeteria/cafe @ Downtown air park. Remembe the Sunset Club across the street from the air park, it was the Sunset club but previously in the 40's it was the Corn Crib. Shipman's cafe at reno and blackwelder and 10th and S. robinson. Balcony where the restrooms were at the Capitol Theater overlooking s. robinson. The Red Penny Bar is still here. Mickey's last chance saloon on Newcastle road. The Charter Club, Black Angus and Exchange Lounge not to forget the Tequila Club in Packin' Town. Webers Root beer on Penn just north of 10th, woops getting north again. The walk thru alley at the south end of TG&Y in reding shopping center. I could go on and on and on but your probably bored to death by now. Some of you might remember these places!!

Yes we used masseys and v&h all the time. Sonny and Billy were good guys I sure miss them.

DODSON'S CAFETERIA:.................59th & S. Penn..........44th & S. Western:...........We have all been there.....Some worked there, some just ate there. However, I have never heard anything BAD about Dodson's Cafeteria....I asked Joe Dodson what he did different to make his Green Beans taste so good....Simply Squeezed Fresh Lemon Juice.......Hmmm.............It works..........What does anyone else have to say about Dodson's Cafeteria...After All, They were a mainstay to many of us weren't they??? We talke about the GREASY FRIES and BURGERS but Only praises about Dodson's.....My Mother-In-Law really used to like to eat there.....

Joe and Charlotte are now living in an assisted living center but in reasonably good health. Joe is quite the art collector and my mother is an artist so they stay in close contact. Actually Joe's mother and father started the original
Dodson's up in Capital Hill in the early 50's. I use to mow Joe's mothers lawn when I was in grade school...Am I old or what!! No reply to that necessary....

Originally Mayridge church were some military housing moved in there from somewhere and Airline Motel was always kind of an "hourly" type cock roach infested, bed bug ridden dump.. Even in it's best of times. DID YOU EVER GO SWIMMING AT BLACK HAWK swimming pool at N.E. 23rd and now I-35??? Don't tell me, you knew the owner either.....
