View Full Version : Southside OKC Memories....anyone?
Generals64 08-30-2008, 01:17 PM I've been hanging out on the Political Forum.
1. We were talking about the tornado last week. Where were you?
2. We didn't dive for golf balls but a friend and I would get a burlap sack from Buster, the pro, and pick them up on the driving range. After we picked them up we'd put them in trays that held a dozen. Buster paid us 8 cents a tray. Then we'd head for the 7-11 on Villa. We also fished in the ponds.
3. I might remember the store but not that he owned it. Where was it?
4. Was it Red Wing? I thought the barber shop was next door to TG&Y.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Sorry, I missed that one. I am watching Gustv and they just categorize it to a four at the tip of Cuba.....I'm getting my generators and supplies ready. Her I come...
2. Twitty owned his first convenient store across the street from Roosevelt. Velton Lang, (former Rudy's manager) ran the store for him. They then opened more of them (8or 9 of them) but, Twitty needed to stay in the entertainment business. He once offered the job of road manager to me at an enormous salary I talked to my wife about it...she gave me THE choice. I'm still with her...
Twitty also owned some restaurants....the first one was located at 72nd & Western. The building is still there, it's now a cemetery marker sales place.
3. the barber shop was on the south side but, there was a shoe store chain store there.....I remember my mother buying thongs (they'r caled flip-flops now) at 3 pair for 25 cents.....times they are a changing.....Pruner, I forgot to tell you that I have acquired an A110 Gibson Mandolin....1957 model.. It is cool......Now I have to learn to play it.

What do you do? Help the Red Cross, Church organization or
clean up? I got to do a little for Katrina for those who had
to leave NO.
Great news about the mandolin! It's a fun instrument. You
can even play it in the bathroom. Tune it and start picking
out tunes like hymns and Little Richard :-)
Hey General, do you have any piano tuning equipment in
your magic bag?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I buy insurance claims, distressed merchandise, Fire Claims etc. anything that would end up in a retail operation. I go where ever the storms or disasters hit. I get a lot of warehouse and freight damages and so on.
What do you need in piano tuning equipment? One of my close friends owns a Music store and his family has owned it for about 40 years. I'm sure he has whatever you might need. Also, I turned down music stores during Katrina (couldn't find anyone that wanted to mess with is...Let me know what you need and I start looking......

Hey 78:........do you remember Twilight Beach?
How about the pool at Springlake?...Did you know the reason they shut the pool down?...The owners would NOT Integrate the pool with Blacks and Whites...They lease to some people for a dolphin show....This was in the late sixties. I still have some pictures of the last time my girlfriend (now wife) and I were there.
You remember the pool at rotary park don't you? and how about the three (3) wading pools at Brock park? Of course, NO pool matched the Wedgewood pool. Lots of memories there.....I remember they would NOT let you swim in cut-offs...had to be a swim suit.
By the way, is OU playing Capitol Hill or Grant next week?

There was a lot of work at that swimming pool over the past year. Doesn't Will Rogers have an L shaped pool? I remember a wading pool shaped like Oklahoma.

Your Wife should really remember Brock park:....There were three (3) wading type pools. One about the ankles one about the knees and one about chest high. They were located on 31st and S. Penn on the west side of the street. It wasn't big enough for the big kids so the little and above had their own place.
You were talking about a station on 59th and Villa?....The son Johnny Usery and I graduated from school together. He was quite a mechanic....His dad did a lot of mechanic work...I think the station was an Apco station on the North Side of 59th. Johnny was killed in a car accident. I think his dad passed away with an aneurism (sp).......

Generals64 09-02-2008, 07:35 PM was ther not a movie theatre in cowtown?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, there was a theater in "Packing Town" (Cowtown to you young guys). The name of it is and was The Rodeo. There is a Country Venue there now. There was also a Variety store where the PRO RODEO headquarters is. It was a Ben Franklin Store and there was a contractual agreement with T.G.&Y. that they would not put a store close to them. there was a store at 29th/Agnew...closed in 1964...John Robinette was the last manager. Then there was one at N.W. 10th and May and that was it.....Hey, I found something the other day (while looking for your Gyroscope) it was an original "OKIE" pin that was only (big deal) given to certain Vendors during the 1965 State Fair. They gave it to T.G.&Y. but I forgot to give it to them....Also found a "Polio Pioneer" pin circa 1954.
those nurses did not like to see me coming in because I could outrun all of them....for a while anyway.......

crappiehead 09-06-2008, 05:06 AM Being a 64 alumni myself Mr. General64, I finally figured out, who you are; let's see if your initials are maybe BH with a sis named D, and a wife named Kay! How'd I do????? I'm retired now at Lake Eufaula; one of my best friends told me of this site, and he too knows you very well, he's done a lot of business with you through the years!!!!!
TeriOKC 09-06-2008, 08:24 AM Hey everyone! Great article on the News 9 site. I'm sorry I wasn't there to meet all of you. Pretty cool that our little community is hitting the "big time"!
Just a couple of observations.
Growing up, my parents always referred to the Stockyards as "Cowtown" and sometimes "Packing Town", but never "the Stockyards". I remember they always banked at Stockyards National Bank, and when we drove down there, the feed lots were always brimming full of cattle. And the SMELL! From where we lived at around 53rd and May, when the wind blew just right...well, it was a bit RIPE.
Brock Park...I remember how beautiful it was. Huge, decades old trees. It was so lush and lovely. Then, the '74 tornado tore it to smithereens. Mama and I went driving over there a couple of days after the storm to view the damage and the majority of what had been there had been reduced to splinters.
Teri
P.S. Why do I think if Sarah Palin was from Oklahoma City, that she'd be one of us?:tiphat:
Prunepicker 09-06-2008, 10:40 AM The "Southside Memories" lunch is at Coit's. Right?

Hey! Grant did better than expected. Did they manage to cross the 50?
Redskins/General 09-07-2008, 09:18 PM I'm not the same General but I sure recognize your name. Crappiehead, seems like I knew a guy at Herronville School that swung a pretty mean lunch pail when he was there way back when. Could that be you???? Just found this site today.
Do you remember Walsers Grocery Store @ sw 32nd and Mckinley and old man Walser being a little tipsy all the time? It eventually turned into Cinderella Cake Shop. I remember when you and Travis Brown got into it and I saved your life when me and the Heath brothers from Choctaw showed up. !! Do you remember that. I had been over at Alvin Easterling's house that day and wound up getting drunk with Rudy Quintero - man were those the days. I'll start sending you some memories that will blow your socks off.. Let me know what you've been up to !!
Prunepicker 09-07-2008, 10:20 PM Let's be careful not to mention the names or give really
good hints of who people are.
If you want to know their name try private messaging.
Prunepicker 09-07-2008, 10:21 PM ... I knew a guy at Herronville School that swung a pretty mean lunch pail when he was there way back when...
I went to Heronville in the 50's. My lunch pail looked like a train engine.
Prunepicker 09-07-2008, 10:27 PM I've been trying to remember the name of a police officer that might have worked
as a security guard at the TG&Y on 74th (hey General64). His first name may have
been Tom and his last name may have started with an S. He drove a white @1958
Volvo.
I got to ride in it once.
crappiehead 09-08-2008, 06:10 AM Redskin/General, you're warm, but that's my cousin that had the mean lunch pale!!!

Hey guys....good article and video. Wish I could have been there....I at least would have been the lone representative of the Southeast Spartans amongst all you Generals!
Are you guys meeting at Coit's this month? What date and time?
SoonerGirl26 09-08-2008, 06:43 AM Talk about embarrasing..... Southeast 43 U.S. Grant 0 :boxing2:
Oh my gosh....I need to run over and paint the cannon blue and white!! (Is it still around at the new school??? If not, it's a shame....that was quite a tradition. )
SoonerGirl26 09-08-2008, 06:51 AM This is embarrasing :Smiley094 ... what was the official Grant hang out in the 50's and 60's?
I'm not sure about the 50's, but in the late 60's we used to cruise through the Del Rancho on 59th (SE hangout), then head to the Triple A (next to Kenny Skaggs) on 59th (Grant hangout) and then to the Spot on Western (Capitol Hill hangout). We would make that loop several times a night. There was always someone in our car that was dating a General or Redskin back then.
Prunepicker 09-08-2008, 08:18 AM Oh my gosh....I need to run over and paint the cannon blue and white!! (Is it still around at the new school??? If not, it's a shame....that was quite a tradition. )
And Semrad would have us out there cleaning it in a heartbeat. :dizzy:
Redskins/General 09-08-2008, 08:25 AM CRAPPIEHEAD At least you are the Crappiehead I thought you were and now I do remember it was your cuz who was so big on lunch pail's. Mine was Roy Rogers with Trigger on the lunch box with a matching thermos.. Remember that horrible smell they all had back when they were metal - and they ALL seemed to get some rust in the bends of the metal....Anyway, glad it's you I found and tell cuz I said Hi!! If Ellen's Grill was still on south Penn about 41st street I'd just buy you both a cheeseburger there and read the sign up over the counter - remember what it said? Actually there were 2 signs !!!!!
TeriOKC 09-08-2008, 01:15 PM I'm pretty sure the Grant hangout in the early to mid 1960's was Al & Dub's drive in on SW 44th, just a little east of Penn.
crappiehead 09-08-2008, 02:16 PM Prunepicker, when I was at Grant, we hung out in 63 and 64 at D & D Country Club Drive In at 59th and Penn! Owner's were Dean Stewart and Darryl Mallicoat!!!! I left for 4 years after that, before returning to OKC!!!! Had many a fun time at D & D's!!!!!!
crappiehead 09-08-2008, 02:22 PM Everett Simrad what a "nightmarish" rememberance!!!!!! And the two Smith boys to go with him, Tom and Wallace; what VP's Grant had back then!!!!! Simrad would of fit in real nice with Germany in WWII!!!!!
crappiehead 09-08-2008, 02:26 PM Redskin, I can't remember what the sign said; but, the burgers were good!!!!!!
Prunepicker 09-08-2008, 03:05 PM I'm pretty sure the Grant hangout in the early to mid 1960's
was Al & Dub's drive in on SW 44th, just a little east of Penn.
On the north side of the street? Yes! What a relief.
Prunepicker 09-08-2008, 03:11 PM Oh my gosh... I need to run over and paint the cannon
blue and white!! (Is it still around at the new school? If not,
it's a shame... that was quite a tradition. )
I believe General64 said they moved inside. I think it was made
by Mattel. It was swell.
mike7720 09-08-2008, 04:48 PM Redskin, I can't remember what the sign said; but, the burgers were good!!!!!!
The most expected and common sign read about having the right to refuse service to anyone - the other one read - "Don't know where Mom is, But we've got Pop on Ice."
Redskins/General 09-08-2008, 05:15 PM Redskin, I can't remember what the sign said; but, the burgers were good!!!!!!
Mr. Crappiehead: The guy answered you correctly about the signs hanging in Ellen's grill. Also, I heard that Mr. Fuller (the teacher) died, any truth to that? And I saw where someone was asking where U.S. Grant's hangout was in the sixties. The main hangout was the D&D drive in next to Kenney Skaggs tag agency (Dean and Darryl's) then it became most well known under the name of Country Club Drive In and last it was bought by a Triple AAA franchisee. The other two hangouts were the Tasty Freeze straight across the street from it and later the McDonalds. All 3 were almost in walking distance. D&D and Country Club owners sold beer and had the small inside place to eat like a minature "HOLLIE'S."
Prunepicker 09-08-2008, 05:33 PM Prunepicker, when I was at Grant, we hung out in 63 and 64 at D & D
Country Club Drive In at 59th and Penn! Owner's were Dean Stewart
and Darryl Mallicoat! I left for 4 years after that, before returning to
OKC! Had many a fun time at D & D's!
Darryl was our neighbor! We spent a few nights at D&D's It's a taco place
now, isn't it? He and Dean were always over at the house. Darryl's wife was
named Dean, too. I'll never forget when they decided to be insurance salesmen.
What a laugh. They came over with their suits, hats and briefcases. Very
syndicated looking.
After the Mallicoats moved to Chandler we rarely heard of them. Darryl bought
a dealership. I think Dean went in with him. Later Dean had one. Darrly got into
some bad trouble but I don't know how his son came out. Can't remember the
daughter's name.

Generals64 09-09-2008, 11:54 PM Hey:............I'm Back!!!!..I have spent the past week (Plus) in beautiful lower Louisiana looking for Salvage to buy...boy does it smell bad down there. Lots of damage but nothing like Katrina...I have to go back the first of next week, I bought eight (8) ready to wear stores and one large Grocery store...Lots of fun...I haven't figured out who Crappiehead is yet but, Fuller did pass away I think in April....He had married a girl in the '64 class.....Crappiehead would know her very well....By the way, my wife has ALL of Semrads (with his name on them) Grant yearbooks. You guys are all tripping out about where the Generals hung out in the 50's and early 60's...It was called Potter's then Alan Edwards and Dub bought it....My Mom was the manager of it for both Potter's and Al 'n Dub for a long time. She also worked at Ellens' for a while....I still have their Salad Dressing Recipe..........
I've had time to remember some of the old remedies and times.....so I'll wind up the clock and get after it again. Pruner:.........I remember the Cop's name but it was Bill and I'll tell you last name at another time...He is an attorney for the D.A.'s office now.........Gotta Go...been up sine 2:00 am dring from New Orleans it's 11:45 pm now.

Generals64 09-10-2008, 10:19 AM HEY: we're all trying to put our minds to task however, we forgot about the original Grant/Southside Drive-Inn hangout.....WESTERN DIP......That (in the middle to late fifties and early sixties) was THE place to go. However, since there weren't a lot of places on the Southside of town they (the kids) would go to places like Karp's, Bixlers, Hollies, 15th st. Del Rancho, and there was one out on Newcastle road (can't remember the name)...then Potter's was built and there became an insurgence of drive-Inn's....."Crappiehead" don't you remember Country Club (D&D) being called "Hillcrest Drive-Inn"?......And, Coit's along with Hollies were kind of neutral places at tht time......
1. Anyone remember the name of the Shoe Salesman from Rothchild's?
2. How about the T.G.&Y. Mascot and what was the brand name of their company products.
3. Crappiehead:.....what was the name of the Grille we went to in Grant Square Shopping Center????? Jewel Box Florist was next door to it....
4. Crappiehead:.......do you remember the portable building that we went to lunch at across Penn from Grant? I remember Hot Dogs, and Frito Chili Pies were like 10 and 15 cents each......Health department made them move when we were in the eighth grade.....
5. Last but not least, I have a 1965 marching band trophy won by Grant...Anyone from '65 want it??????
See ya next time:........................
