Grand Avenue later became Sheridan. Not sure when that
happened. You knew that, right? You're older than me.

My grandmother told me that Grand became Sheridan. In earlier years when the Sheraton came to town, the name was changed again at their request. When the Sheraton closed (don't know what year) it was returned to Sheridan.

Not exactly correct on how that happened, papaOU. Please see this article by Steve:

I knew I never remembered the street actually being called Sheraton so I researched it a little.

Yep, I got a message from his cousin the day he died. His sister was in my class and she died just a few years after we graduated with a brain tumor. Jerry's 93-year old mother is still alive.... outlived both of her children. So sad for her.

And what a great wrap around porch, great for sitting outside in the evening. Of course, I was a youngster then and that didn't interest me. We called Mr. Reding "Old Man Reding" because he was kinda grouchy. I don't suppose that had anything to do with the fact that we rode his goats (that really got his goat), played in the hay bales in his barn, rode his horses without his permission, and did lot's of things at his pond, not to mention running roughshod over the pasture from 36th to 44th, and Douglas to Western. Actually, when I was growing up, it stretched a little farther, West of Douglas and South of 41st. Now, why would that make him grouchy?. Mrs. Reding was always a nice lady and knew we were just kids playing. I think she was happy as long as we didn't hurt anything or ourselves. Were you close to JoAnn(sp)?

So, are hot dogs still .20? And if we all lie about our age, we can all be served the tiny little mug of root beer for free, then I think I can afford to buy. I just checked, I have almost five bucks, cash money in my pocket. Actually, I'm going to have a slight problem coming at 3:00, I have plans for 5:00 but I hope to at least stop by for a beer (root of course). Jake Samara owned Sussy's. He said he was in his office, it was
the Tempo Club, and heard noise in the front. This guy was
rearranging the tables, it was Jack Sussy. He said he was going
to work there and was getting things ready. Jake asked if he
had any restaurant experience and he said that he worked at

had the charm necessary for good business, Jake's was about

Prunepicker, I would like to chime in with some facts and some rumors (things I had believed but am not certain about). And hopefully, I will be corrected on the rumors. First, Sussy's name was Jack Sussman. When I was fourteen I double dated with a driving friend at Sussy's on about 40th and Lincoln Blvd, East side of the street. It was a big hit and he then opened "Jack's" on N. E. 23rd between coltrane and Sooner, North side of the street. It was a little more upscale. My first encounter with Jake Samara was at the Sussy's on about 24th and Robinson on the East side. I worked at Lincoln Plaza and met him again at the Lincoln restaurant. By the way, there was a bar attached called the Prow Lounge. I don't know the connection between Sussman and Jake so I will assume you know a lot more about that than I do. I ate lunch at the Lincoln restaurant at least once a week for almost ten years. Jake was there that whole time. Rumors - I was certain that Sussman was from Chicago. He wasn't the first person to bring pizza to OKC but he made it really popular. He owned or was connected with The Nomad and The Nomad II (still open on North May) and they still serve his style of pizza. I think it's really good. There was also a restaurant on Reno, just East of Meridian and I believe it was called "Sullivan's" that served Sussy's original style pizza. I believe Jake was Papa Dio's (Bonadio) brother-in-law. Bonadio's daughter, Candace(sp) Gideo, Jake's niece opened Papa's Little Italy on the I-35 service road at Hefner. I'm open to any corrections since I am 67 and slightly senile.

The one I remember was on 36th and Lincoln. I remember Jake Samara and I called him "Mr. Samara" . He was very nice and
well dressed. I also remember there was a door from the restaurant which lead to a dark place where exotic dancers were. I "peeked"
every chance I got when my Grandmother was busy. I saw a beautiful lady on stage but she had on a blue "see through" evening gown.
I also remember the candy for sale at the cash register ! Cream mints, the little round ones with dark chocolate , some were dark
chocolate with orange filling and some were some kind of buttercream filling . They sold cigars as well. And of course, the food was
very good. Lots of deep red colors in a dim atmosphere.

I meant to say "Spaghetti Factory", do you think Mr. Samara might have plagiarized a little? Actually, it's good marketing if you can get away with it. Name recognition is really powerful. When you were "peeking" you were looking at the North part of restaurant/bar. That is what became the Prow Lounge. No women (well not many), several pool tables and a nice place to sit after work for a beer to wind down before going home. It was the working man's "Governer's Club". Prunepicker, I decided to look around on the web and found a couple of links. One is a story of Jake Samara's public life and appears pretty accurate. It mentions a place on N. E. 23rd where the Sequoya building is now. It doesn't mention the one East of what is now I-35 so I wonder if maybe that was a Jack Sussman restaurant. The article does mention that Sussman was Jake's manager. I did find where Sussman was from Chicago but that doesn't mean that he came here from there. He probably was in New Orleans trying to make a living before coming to OKC. I enjoy the internet, but I know to take what I find with a grain of salt. The second link only mentions Sussy's once and indicates it was his first pizza restaurant and it was on 36th and Lincoln. I'm beginning to doubt that, now that I have learned about the Sequoya location. I didn't even know it existed.

Sounds as if Jake had owned several lounges.
This may be a rumor but I heard he owned a lot, like dozens,
of small beer joints.

Didn't Sussy try to burn down a restaurant on Thanksgiving Day
two years in a row?

Prunepicker, Very good! I would never have remembered that without help. Was he in financial trouble or just some other shady deal? Seems like the police couldn't find enough evidence to convict him though. Do you remember?

Did he not do time for insurance fraud at least 40 years ago? I was told that is how & why the N.E. 23rd business burned. I remember it and the south robinson locations the most. First time having pizza was on Robinson.
