He (Ernie) was many a young man's hero.....I was at Grant when he played for the football team..... between him and Jody Crosby, Grant was a power house....Of course, you can't ignore Mike O'Shea (deceased) and John Suggs
That was a terror for the OKC Highschool football club. Tracy Norwood was coach when Ernie was there....

Professional Football Player. 1st Lt. in the Army Reserve (Unit: A BTRY, 2ND BN, 11TH ARTY RGT, 101 ABN DIV in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma). Bob was born James Robert Kalsu and attended Del City High School in Del City, Oklahoma. At 6'3" and 235 pounds, he was an All-American offensive tackle in 1967 as the University of Oklahoma won the Big Eight Conference title. The Buffalo Bills selected him in the eighth round of the 1968 college draft but he quickly proved himself by earning the team's Rookie of the Year award in his first AFL season as guard – it would also be his final season of football. Bob had made an ROTC commitment with the 101st Airborne Division in college and in late 1969 he was called to duty in Vietnam. He was told that as a pro football player arrangements could be made where he wouldn't have to serve but Bob would have none of it. He said, "I gave my word to my country. Just because I play pro football doesn't make me any better of a man or any different of a man than the men already serving our country. I'm going to live up to that commitment and the word I gave." Bob left behind his beloved wife, Jan, who was pregnant and a young daughter. On July 21, 1970, only eight months into his tour of duty, Bob fell while helping defend Ripcord Base on an isolated jungle mountaintop near the Ashau Valley, Thua Thien, South Vietnam - enemy fire ignited an ammunition depot. Bob's wife Jan received word of her husband's death as she lay in her hospital bed only hours after giving birth to her son, Bob Jr. Bob Kalsu was the only active professional football player killed in the Vietnam War. I had a friend in highschool that "HAD" to drive a 64 Nash Rambler stationwagon to school. He never thought it was as cool as the other guys cars. He always drooled over my 327/4 speed impala. He thought I was just being nice to trade cars with him on Saturday nights, but there wasn't a better ride to take your date to the drive-inn movies in than a big roomy stationwagon. Damn I sure hated to see him trade that thing off for a boring 67 SS 396.!!

Took us about forever and a day to plant 40 acres and now they do that between breakfast and coffee break and in an enclosed cab, too.

I lived on the same street that Gen64 lived on and I could never figure out how he got his stick horses to run so fast. We would trade horses and damned if he couldn't get my horse to outrun his. Never could figure it out. Gen64 also had a herd of stick cows and stick sheep. He sure was fond of those sheep.

I did. Cut the front forks off another bike and slide them onto yours. Butterfly handle bars, banana seat and a large "sissy bar" .

I wonder what Gen/64 did to hop up his stick horse "Trigger" We know he used a leather belt for a bridle and a mop head for the mane!! I swiped one of the little masonite Out of Order signs off of a washing machine in a laundramat to hang where the grill had been. In our Class Will, I left the honor of having the sharpest car at Grant to Dickie Filler (class of '61) who had about a 1950 Willis.

You know, when you are in the 8th Grade and you see all of those "OLD" Guys and their cars you just are amazed. I know Bobby Atherton had the best looking purple '50 model (I think) lowered Chevy in the world. My Sister (1 year younger than you) had a '54 Ford Convertible her Junior year......I was mesmerized by the cars the guys and gals had.....But then, I was an 8th Grader....and I remember the old Studebaker,,,,,

Mine never got any cool pin stripes like the REALLY cool cars. Bobby's was minimal and tasteful. JUST the right amount. The front of his frame was an inch off the ground. Sparks flew and some dips he simply HAD to avoid. Dips in the road, silly, not THAT kind of dips. :LolLolLol
