Speaking of baloney samiches... When ever I smell the diesel from a bus
I smell a baloney samich. It happened when I was on the bus from
Heronville to home. For some reason I didn't eat my baloney samich and it
was a hot day. The smell of baloney and diesel has become one of those
childhood memories that returns quite often.[/QUOTE]

Reminds me of a song! (Oh Really). :bright_id

Her hand grasped sticky metal intricate latchwork-
Open t' the room uh smell cold mixed with bologna
Rubber bands crumpled wax paper bonnets
Fat goose legs 'n special jellies
Ignited by the warmth of the room
The old fart smelled this thru his important breather holes
Cleverly he dialed from within from the outside we observed
That the nose of the wooden mask
Where the holes had just been uh moment ago
Was now smooth amazingly blended camouflaged in
With the very intricate rainbow trout replica

I didn't start Heronville until about 1962 , so you guy were ahead of me (Mrs Nance was my third grade teacher)
your right the rolls were the best, but then again most all the food there was good. My Mother worked in the cafateria there when I went to schoool, so I never, ever got to take my lunch. MMMMM.......the no bake cookies, peanut butter cookies.

But the lunch I hated was what they called Chicken pot pie.

That's where I went to school while they were building Hillcrest Elementary.

Man, those yeast rolls were the best! I'll never forget this evil teacher on
cafeteria duty made me sit down and eat my spinach. As soon as she got
out of sight I quickly dumped the spinach and ran to the playground.

NO WAY she could hold a candle to Miss Crowell. Come to think of it, she's
probably close to 80. Help! I just realized that I'm thinking that an 80 year
old woman is a babe! Come to think of it, I think the same thing about
Maureen O'Sullivan (Jane). Is anyone of this list in the movies?

Fish on Fridays was a given. It was nice to know what was coming up!

Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band. Song is called Old Fart at Play. I just put the lyrics that pertained to baloney to help Prune "remember" is skool days. Release date was 1969. I have the song on a promotional album titled ZAPPED. Cost me a dollar bill through the mail. Produced by Frank Zappa, it's an LP with songs from first time artists (Alice Cooper) to Old Standards (Lord Buckley/ The Train). I have never met anyone that has seen the album before much less listened to it. Great music!!!! :kicking:

Next time Southside Girl feels like dancing I'll have her call me and we can dance to a few of the tunes. Tim Buckley/I Must Have Been Blind. Says she likes to slow dance and that's the tune for it. Don't tell her I said that.

HEY!! Southside Girl! Section on slow dancing is not really there. You have been working at the computer too long today. Shut it off and have a nap. Of course, if the dance is something you might be inclined to do......Well then, heck yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my last two years of elementary school, grades 5 & 6 were spent at Robert E. Lee grade school. My favorite teacher was Mr. Darns, grade 6. Although a got more than a few swats from him he was a good and fun guy.
On the eve of the final day of school, I went with my Dad to Griders where I had seen this display......asked if I could by it the person I spoke with told me I could just have it. Did Griders have pharmacy at that time? Any who........took the box home, attached an item to it, wrapped the thing and was ready for the last day of school........ Mr. Darns was surprised when I gave it to him. It was a display box that had to be 3 foot tall and wide..........It was a display that looked like a giant box of Bayer Aspirin. I affixed one of those small tins of aspirin to the top of the box. He always said that I was one of his worst headaches..........He was pleased with the gift.
He died several years ago.........he was still a young man at the time.....Seems he was getting ready to head to school......leaned-over to tie his shoes and fell over dead.

Went to Garfield Elementary, Roosevelt Jr High and graduated from Capitol Hill in 1970. They all bring back a lot of memories. Thanks, this is really a neat forum. I grew up all my life in OKC. I married a girl from Northwest Classen. So I've been all over the city. After graduating I went to college at Central State and graduated in 1974. I then joined the Marines and spent 16 years. I was injured in 1988 and in 1990 they decided I wasn't medically qualified to continue so they retired me. Then we moved back to Oklahoma and I now live in Edmond.
I work with a lady that use to live on the southside on 34th near Grand. We been talking about the things we remember.
I was telling her my fondest memory about the movie theater on Western and 59th. I think it was the Plaza? There was a pizza place across the street. I was in the 9th grade and one friday night I met this girl there that I like. We went to see The Blue Max. Well needless to say we didn't see to much of the movie!!

O.K.here we go......As always everyone knew that "The Twilight Zone" on the Northside (Carey Place) was haunted ,,....at least we thought it was...But, when I was about 8-9 years old there was an old three story house located on the South West Corner of 59th and S. May Avenue....Both streets were Dirt and Gravel at the time. Now, a lot of kids would go up to the second story because we were allowed to...Also, the big guys kept cigarettes (they had stolen) hidden in the walls. And there were pictures of girls without their tops on....Sheesh.....some of them were actual photos...How'd that happen?...Now, No one went to the third story because a kid jumped out of the window and killed himself over a girl......Why would anyone do that???? Most of you guys and gals never saw the old farm house did you????mysteriously disappeared one day along with the barns there and...............................Never know.

Also, we had dug a cave into the side of the creek one time and it caved in we were told a kid was still in there and his parents were looking for him but we couldn't tell anyone caused we'd all get in trouble....the older guys Suck...All they ever wanted to do was scare us....did a good job....If redskins/General ever gets back on this thread he has some good stories about haunted warehouses.

The Yale theater seemed to always show great horror movies. Not the crap they call horror today. Today it's gory not scary. My brother and I would go and spend an entire day there on a Saturday or Sunday. Being grade schoolers we had a vivid imagination. Of course it was dark when we began our trip home and heading west on Commerce we had to pass three alley's to get to walker. We would take turns. One would get himself tight against the wall (Reminds me of a song) and slowly positioning our head to where one eye can see down the alley. Then the person against the wall would yell GO! At that the other person would run to the other side of the alley and look out to make sure it was clear and tell him to run.
We get to Commerce and Walker...go south on walker to 26th. Plenty of light until we start heading West on 26th. Dark and immense trees over the sidewalk..a large hedge in front of one house. Needless to say we made it home okay and forgot about the trip home in time to do it the next Saturday...

I never got to see that house, I do remember the old one on the north east corner and it was kind of creepy back in the day. There was that house over on macarthur or rockwell and 74th I believe but there was always rumors of devil worshipers and stuff going on over there and I do recall 2 guys taking a girl over there killing her in the house but they caught them loosers thank god! Must have been horrible for the parents.

papaOU,
I was suppose to go to Grant. We lived in one of those neighborhoods where you could choose either Capitol Hill or Grant. I played freshman football for Grant. My brother, which is 7 yrs older is a 1965 grad from Grant. So in the spring they changed the district around and my neighborhood was assigned to CHHS, there was no choice.

There was suppose to be a bridge out south of OKC (or was it Moore) that was suppose to be haunted.

I also remember when May was 2 lane. I also think it was past 89th that it was a dirt road. There were several ponds, that my brother and his friends would take me fishing. We would pay the owner and fish there all day.

I trying to catch up on the posts. I don't have a PC at home. I usually take my laptop from work and use it at home. But reading all the post is popping a lot of old memory bubbles.

He had two brothers who were drafted. Denny and Danny. One never made it out of the minors and the other, going after a foul ball ran into the backstop so hard he suffered kidney damage.

Their Dad passed away last fall or winter.

Darrell had a great carrer with the K.C. Royals but then got mixed-up and hooked on drugs. He committed suicide.

Buffalo meat?

Hey!!! What the heck you going to Texass and it's not the first Saturday in October?

Just when I start to think you Grant people are not so dumb you go and pull a stupid stunt like this.

Don't try to justify it in any manner because it ain't gonna' work.

I have a borther who lives in Texass and I never go to see him.

When my sister and her family lived in the Dallas area she had Thanksgiving at her house. Didn't go!!!!

Man! You talk about having "Grant Pride" and then you slap Oklahoma in the face........

Do you not ralize that if it were not for Texass we would only be about a two hour drive from the beach.................

It's still there!!! OMG, it's got to be at least 50 years olds.

There also use to be a restaurant on south Sheilds that my Dad use to take all the family to on Sat night. It was on the (I think) east side of Sheilds, but it was always packed. This had to be in the early 60's.

That swimming pool that was on Sheilds. Can't it's name, swim there a lot. But I played baseball with a guy that when he graduated for S.E., he signed a major league contract and bought the place. A least that is what I was told. Anyone remember his name?

was the resurant possibly Swank's?

Late 50's, it shut down after a shooting in which the daughter in law who worked there with her husband and father. She died. Gloria Moore went to Grant, it was her dad's place. It closed in about the early to mid 80's and may be opened by someone else now, I don't know. Well known for their breakfast and evening steaks which were not very good!
