View Full Version : Southside OKC Memories....anyone?
SoonerGirl26 02-19-2009, 12:33 PM Soonergirl, wasnt Woodson park once Oklahoma City airfield. Before they moved it out to Will Rogers? I heard of Willey Post taking off from OKC airfield at 29th and May. The oldest guy I can find says was at Woodson.
You are so right!! It was the Oklahoma City Municipal Air Terminal before the Southwest Golf Course was built there.
gen70 02-19-2009, 12:39 PM The Green's had two sons and a daughter the boys names were Richard and Mike don't remember the girls name for sure but think it was Dianne she used to babysit me and one of my brothers. Neighbors that I can remember the Hunter's and the Bottom's. I quess that's where you got Butts. (Funny!!) I may remember some other family names after I think about it awhile.
SoonerGirl26 02-19-2009, 12:53 PM I never knew Woodson Park was a golf course. Interestingly, Woodson Park
is larger than Willow Creek - formerly Hillcrest GC?
There's so much to learn about our old stompin' grounds.
...And before it was Willow Creek it became Walnut Creek in 1978.
Here is an interesting article from 1954 about all the people who bought houses along Country Club Drive and the area surrounding the golf course.

Bottoms!, Stevie and Susie, and I remember the Hunter boys also
gen70 02-19-2009, 01:35 PM That's right!! The Hunter boys names were Terry and Trey. Trey was killed by OKC S.W.A.T. over a domestic thing. Both were like members of the family. When our family moved over on S. Klein close to Jefferson Jr. High the Hunter's moved in right next door. On 50th they lived about three houses down on same side of street, so we lived close to the Hunter's for many years.

SoonerGirl26 02-19-2009, 01:51 PM Does anyone remember the Green House owned by a fellow named FENT on N.E. corner of S.W. 59th and Walker??? He had a real good looking daughter that I knew very well, havent' seen her in a while. I believe her first name was something like Katy or Kathy or the like..
Kathy Fent did live on the corner of SW 59th & Walker, she graduated from SE in '67, a year ahead of me. I think she dated some Grant guys in school..... were you one of them?? Did you graduate from Grant or Capitol Hill?...your screen name has me confused, but that's easily done!!

Redskins/General 02-19-2009, 02:06 PM As we walked out of the main doors, with our little brains teeming with
knowledge, and crossed S. Pennsylvania there was our bus stop. What was
the business in that small glass front building? I thought it was a cleaners.
It was, you be right!!
FRISKY 02-19-2009, 02:06 PM ...And before it was Willow Creek it became Walnut Creek in 1978.

Redskins/General 02-19-2009, 02:08 PM There was a cleaners at the corner of 50th & Penn. and a laundrymat next door. I lived 2nd house on S. side of 50th from the church.
Do you remember your neighbor to the east named Homer Hardy who is now deceased?

gen70 02-19-2009, 02:17 PM Do you remember your neighbor to the east named Homer Hardy who is now deceased?
I don't remember a Homer Hardy living there but there were three different families that lived in that house while we lived there which was in the 50's. I think we had moved by 1960.
OKCWINO 02-19-2009, 02:20 PM I quess I could debate that with my brother Don, he lives in Elk City.
I thought the oldest one was smart, he just did'nt know where to move his chess pieces
gen70 02-19-2009, 02:28 PM You got that one right. Brother Don has a genius IQ. How about PM me your name, I might know you.
FRISKY 02-19-2009, 02:30 PM Do you remember your neighbor to the east named Homer Hardy who is now deceased? What was the name of the people that lived SW of Grant in a house on the north side of the street with a bunch of cases of beer or beer cans stacked under the carport on the east side of the house? It was a few houses west of Penn.

Redskins/General 02-19-2009, 02:48 PM I almost forgot we had a policeman who lived next door his last name was Green.
Powell Chick the red headed cop!! He worked his off days at a business my dad owned driving a delivery truck, until he screwed up and gave my mother a ticket. We have very very unusual name, so there no way he could have made a mistake. I think he may have passed away, but I'm not for sure.

Redskins/General 02-19-2009, 02:58 PM Yeah, that's him. He used to work off duty at McDonald's at 59th & Penn..
His running buddy cop for that area was a cop named J.R. Melton, he was a real dandy!

Dave Reed still cuts my hair. John Bottoms must be pretty old by now. His daughter came to my Mom's funeral.

I lived on the other side of the golf course, on Hillcrest drive. I remember there wasn't much of anything south of 65th or 66th street.
Prunepicker 02-19-2009, 08:23 PM Well, we don't have to worry about embalming you... The preservatives in a Twinkie are good for about 10 years...
Hardy har har. Twinkies are the breakfast of champions!
And, yes I remember the house and the Wonder Bread... I was married and a loaf of Bread was .10 cents. We lived on Agnew and 47th st. in an upstairs apartment... Oh to be young again...
I'll bet your rent was a sky high $45 per month. That was a high rent
area. I mean, living walking distance from Don's Drive-In and Across the
Street!

I remember going there after high school to get a belt with all the tools to stamp out my name on the back and all the decorations, then had to buy all the dyes, and a big honkin belt buckle you could eat cereal out of. I think that belt cost around $4000.00 WHEN IT WAS DONE!
