I was 6 months old during the Spring '60. My mother held me wrapped in a blanket in the hall. My older brothers and sisters were either at school or at work. It blew out our windows, but took roofs off of the houses around us. The people directly across the street lost their roof and built a cellar later that year.

Keirn's Dairy (Agnew and 44th) had the BEST broasted chicken and potatoes and was one of the few "take out" items we ever ate. I still remember Mama and Daddy carrying it into the kitchen in the brown paper bags they packed it in, soaked with grease on the bottom. It still sounds good to me!

Speaking of Daddy, God Rest His Sweet Soul, yesterday was one year since we lost him.

For years, my Daddy was a butcher at Rudy's Red Bud at 59th and May.

That was called "SandTown"...The flats were just north of the railroad tracks between Many and Pennsylvania.

Wish I had know sooner about the Ranch Steakhouse. I have Al Good's Valve Trombone. I visited him about a year before he died and bought a bunch of his old instruments for nothing, he was just getting rid of things. Nostalgia rings true with the Valve Trombone as I played that from the ninth grade (Roosevelt) through high school....Gave him $10.00 for it...Still plays, just a little old like the rest of us.
......Wedges were wing tip shoes with a leather flat bottom from front to back...we had Continental Taps (on front) and horseshoe taps on the back. Penny Loafers were considered "kiss me quick" shoes. Then they became the style. We wore Wheat Jeans and Sneakers with no socks...Madras shirts with the tails tucked out. My mother could straight starch anything...Always a crease.

........Try the Mustard fries....you'll enjoy them the first time......No one seems to talk about the restaurant Across the Street at 59th and Agnew. That's where Hal Smith started in the Restaurant business......

.....Do you remember Montgomery Wards downtown?...Being a South Sider, we scraped every penny we could...A "Flip tongue" shoe came into style for a while and Monkey Wards used to have a sample basement...$2.00..(one yard mowed and edged and bagged paid $2.00)

let me know next time:...See ya next time

There was a big donut shop on May and 44th st. Used to sell donuts door to door. The largest one I can remember was Hardigres who eventually ended up a donut factory on Main and Western. They would hired kids to sell donuts and you got so much per dozen. We got to eat all we wanted before we went out to sell. Got to the point I didn't want to see another donut. There is still a shop on south Penn about 55th st.............

As a kid I did newspapers, handbills, donuts and my specialty was the stuff ordered from the comic boks.. I sold hundreds of blue glittering signs like"Jesus Loves Me". Paid 15 cents was supposed to sell them for 35 cents but I sold mine for 50 cents and kept buying with the extra profit. Got a new Bicycle out of the deal...(Not really new but new to me).

Does anyone remember MR. COFFEY? He was the local door to door insurance salesman for our area. I remember he came around every week and collected 11 cents from my mom...Sometimes she had to scramble :...selling pop bottles etc. but, man those were the days. I used to go to the T.G.&Y. at Mayridge and help the magazine salesman pull the fronts off of the magazines he got..He'd give me all the books I wanted....Boy were they good trading material. Comic books wer in high demand but,.....there were a few "Girlie" magazines...TOP DOLLAR.

Did you know that Mayridge Baptist Church was originally built out of old Army barracks that were moved in. As kids, we helped drag the blocks under the buildings to help the people of the Church.

GOTTA GO:........see ya next timehttp://www.okctalk.com/images/smilies/texas-sucks.gif

The donut shop on 59th and Penn. is Geralds. He started out on the N.W. corner of S.W. 59th and Penn. Then they moved across the street to the shopping center, next door(maybe 2 or 3) to Dodsons. Later he moved again to the current locaton on the west side of Penn between 59th and 55th.

The Alamo Courts Motel was ( is?) on the S.E. corner of S.W. 44th and Rob. I grew up with a guy who lived there, his parents owned it.

How about Capitol Hill ice cream on the South side of S.W. 29th between Rob. and Harvey, you guys remember that?

Around 73 there was a resturant on the corner of 59th and Agnew. I worked there as a waitress. My first real job at 16. There was a sit down resturant and a drive in outside. I worked inside. It is now a Del Rancho...But then it was Don's Drive In and the owner also owned Don's in Del City....
I loved their fries and hamburgers....

I met alot of people there. A Fireman named Kenneth Walker was a regular as was his son in law...
I remember Geralds Donuts also...I think they were open 24 hrs....

It seemed like then I was either working or in school...when we got off sometimes we would go eat either donuts or shakeys pizzas....

1. Big Giant food Store just closed last week. The big giant on Portland was originally Honest John's. Owned by the same family however as Big giant and Fox Lumber.
2. Remember the Moose Head at Crystals? I still have it hanging over my fireplace.
3. Across the Street was where Hal Smith (owner of Charleston's etc.) started in the food business.
.4 The Taco Bell on S. Penn was opened in 1965. I was married in '66 my wife first got pregnant in '68 and that was ALL she would eat...Bad Memories there. Not Really.
5. The skating rink building is still there you must have been very small when you skated there and it is on 27th st. It is a carpet store now. The floor is still there though.
6. However, STAY with us you have some good memories.

O.K. you are right about the Alamo Courts. But, there was a Motel on the N.W. corner of 44th and Robison...Was deemed a bad mess and bulldozed down. The corner is still level. Was a major Brothel in South OKC. Do you remember Jesse's?

2. Kaiser's on 10th (N.W.) and Walker had the same GREAT ICE CREAM. My wife's father was a refrigeration man and I would go with him on calls all the ice cream you wanted when the cooler's "down".

The Big Giant on Portland closed many years ago. We never shopped there but us kids wanted to because of the cool sign.

It's a Mexican business of some kind, now, unless that's closed, too. There was a junk yard just north we used to go to.

4. Grant's winningest football coach was Dick Evans. However, he won the games while he was head coach at Midwest City.
5. In 1966 Grant won a city basketball championship and they weren't even considered to be good enough to play. Big Fluke but, Grant got the win and the trophy.

Grant has a "colorful" History it's too bad someone doesn't write about it and it's rival Capitol Hill. Southeast was not a threat, they were just there. Bobby Murcer was good too bad he passed away. Prayers are always with Kay and the kids.

Reynolds Lettering was at 46 or 47, maybe 48 or so(can you tell I can't remember) on the West side of Penn. Anyway. Ted Reynolds was one of, if not the, most colorful individuals that hailed from the Southside of OKC in the 60's and 70's era (IMO). But Ted had other business interest as well. Ted owned a bar or two on the Southside. The one I remember, was the Colony Club on 36th and Penn.

Now some may tell you that his lettering shop was really just a front for his "Book" business. It may have been, I don't know. I do know that he loved coaching and sponsering football/baseball teams for Southside kids.

I can tell you one thing about Ted, when it came to uniforms and equipment for his teams, they had the best, money was not an issue, he made sure of that. I don't know if it's still there, but the little league fields at Reno and May were named "Ted Reynolds (Park/Fields)" He was one of a kind for sure.

true, but you're forgetting a few tenants... weeba's (sp?) was before my time but after that it was it was mccartney's and crown iga and then it was pratt's.

when it was mccartney's (and possibly weeba's) they would give you a numbered plastic card upon checking out. you'd head out to your car and drive up to the front entrance. your bagged groceries would be loaded up in a big plastic container and would head out on a conveyer... just like the baggage claim at the airport. you'd hand your number to the valet, pop your trunk, and the staff would load your groceries.

You guys are all dreaming. There was a hardware store there and then a Carpet store. It was vacant for about 18 months when Office Depot moved in. Tried to lease the building but, they were real proud of it. Now, if you go to where Primo's etc. you see where McCartney's/Grand Bazaar/ Pratt's used to be.

Clackers were an idea by a guy named "Bud Smith" of Big Red sports sales. He sold T.G. & Y. a boatload of those things until they started exploding upon contact and people were getting badly. I used to run the store on 59th & Penn.... a kid was messing with off the display when one broke and knocked out one of the front glasses. We quit buying them then...his biggest thing was an item that he had cut and put together on a piece of cardboard and they kept your glasses tight. Good idea, he made a fortune we a bunch of them. Can't remember the catchy name he had for them....I'll remember give me time...... Coney Island is next door to the ORIGINAL spot. You are thinking about them being across the street next to the Old Yale Theater.

What were Clackers?

Clackers were DANGEROUS they were two polyurethane type balls (size of a Golf Ball) with a string through them and you shook them until they started clacking and then you tried to see how long you could go.

do you remember the guy that raised Camels on the S.W. corner of 89th and Western. Now, that was cool.......

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I remember one time my girlfriend ( now my wife of going on 43 years) and I decided to go and park out by Resthaven Cemetery. Now, as cool as I thought I was I was starting to tell to her a ghost tale...it was warm outside and I had the windows on my '63 Impala 2-door hardtop down.....when out of no where a dairy cow had gotten and she stuck her and moooed it scared me more than my girlfriend and that Chevrolet never nor ran that fast in the five years I owned it. Almost yanked the cows head...she got caught in the car....Funny now but it scared the crap out of me...didn't go and park anymore after that.....

When my wife was young, she wanted to do the same thing, she really wanted that GOLD Horseshoe. She reached under the stands and found a nail sticking out, she brought blood to her finger and Foreman Scotty (being the company man) grab her up and did a commercial for bactine...Spray it on her finger and let the little boy next to her get on the birthday horse. Next time you think about it, go buy a horseshoe, paint it Gold and give it to your cousin for Christmas....They really know you care then.

See you next time........
