View Full Version : Southside OKC Memories....anyone?
Generals64 01-19-2009, 08:13 AM my dad said the place where Geno's was. Had been the Capitol Hill HS, hangout in the early 50's. Agnew skating rink is going way back. Remember Mac's drug store, on 29 and agnew? Later morphed into Mac's tag agency.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Remember Mac's Drug...Right on the corner...T.G.&Y. was next to it.....That store closed in 1965. Everyone moved to Economy Square at 29th and May.
Iremember 29th St. being Used Car Alley. Most of the cars on 29th were like the "B" rated movies......That's about the only area Southside kids could afford their cars. Bought my second car right down the street...('55 Chevy Bel-Air)...Salmon and Gray...265 Powerglide..My freind "The Villae Idiot" and I put bunch of miles (at .19 cents a gallon) on that old ride. I had a minor Fender Bender....Put on a new fender and then decided to pant it Flat Black Primer....About 40 cans later and a bunch of laughs we kept rolling....What a life Not a worry in the wolrd except where the next Madras shirt was going to come from and how Heavy I could get my mom to starch my Wheat Jeans...
Redskins/General 01-19-2009, 08:47 AM I thought Capital Hill Lawn Mower shop was on Robinson south of 29th.
It was, they started back in the 50's there as Capitol-Hill Bicycle Shop and Lawn mower repair, about 32nd and S. Robinson. They later moved to 48th and S. Penn and concentrated on small engine products (mowers/chain saws etc.) and bicycles. They finally got out of the bicycle business. They are not rhe easiest people to deal with, won't be getting any of my business. Very INDEPENDENT!!
Generals64 01-19-2009, 08:54 AM O.K.,....Have a question for anyone out there.....On S.W. 29th and Agnew, Northwest Corner there is a Convenient store....What was there in the early years? I know there was something but I can't make my mind remember. Agnew Skating rink used to have the Best "Greasey" Hamburgers in town. I think some of the Capitol Hill guys used to go there, buy a burger and used the Grease on their hair.....Right?
Prunepicker 01-19-2009, 10:28 AM Did anyone ever go to Gino's Restaurant, about 27th & Agnew? Went there alot
when I went to Jackson JH.
We went to Geno's a few times. It was pretty good but Dad didn't care that much
for it.

I have no idea. Maybe it was something to do with cars. Wasn't the Big Red
Steak House on the SW corner and Charlie Brown's, a bar, on the SE?

I remember some kind of Steak house on the Southwest corner....There have been so many things in at the South East corner after TG&Y and Mac's pulled out...can't remember....You have to be there this Saturday Guy.....
Redskins/General 01-19-2009, 03:46 PM On the N.E. corner of 29th & Agnew was a popular auto parts store, it started with a B, can anyone remember the name of it? They carried about anything you could want in automotive parts and I think they had a small machine shop!!

Prunepicker 01-19-2009, 05:45 PM Brittain Brothers?

Prunepicker 01-19-2009, 05:51 PM No, this was a family name, they were known for being open on Sundays!!

B. Johnson, he had everything Delco. I think they call that steak house Red's. Rememeber the old Knox gas station west of that? We got a bunch of those Amercian Indian glasses there.
Redskins/General 01-19-2009, 06:59 PM Maybe Penny Auto? I'm just guessing.

It was the Big Red Steak House. Prunette didn't like it.
Was it a Knox or Deep Rock gas station?
Rickster 01-19-2009, 07:58 PM Yeah, I remember Agnew skating rink. Went there often. Geno's use to have realy good cinnamon rolls.
Thanks Redskins/General. I thought Capital Hill lawn mower was on Robinson at one time.
29th & Agnew area brings back alot of memories. The steak restaurant, the Roundup.
How about Lovelace shoes (original store). We use to take our shoes there to get taps put on them. Who remember's the taps.

Mr. Lovelace would always grab and pinch my belly. I didn't like him. My parents
wouldn't let us have taps.

I remember putting Continental Taps on the Front of my WEDGES (wing tip of course) and Horseshoe taps on the back.....Could slid 40 feet in the hall or until you got caught. Then it was "Grab your Ankles" time. We use to use the shoe shop in Airline Shopping Center...Mr. Loveless was always 10 -15 cents higher....Hey, that was a lot of money then......Mr. Loveless himself has since passed away. Tough old bird but a real good guy...
Rickster 01-19-2009, 08:03 PM You're so right Generals64.
Rickster 01-19-2009, 08:04 PM I didn't remember the name Continental until you mentioned it. Thanks.

Speaking of shoe's and such. Gen/64, I think I saw you last time I went to Mayridge barber shop, got my boogie waxed, then had "Robert" shine my wedges for me. I would always leave my good "Cordovan's" there and pick them up later. Oh, always went next door to Truelove's, shot some snooker and had a beer or three before going in the back room for a little light gambling!!!!!!!! Those were the days!!

Mayridge Barber shop, Truelove's, Cordovan's HMMM.....Were you at Truelove's when the BIG FIGHT broke out???. Couldn't get out of there fast enough. The old Mayridge Shopping Center...Southside Deluxe....Shaw drug Hamburger and a malt....Do you remember Bob Poole's Grocery store on the Northeast corner of 44th/May???...I lived in Texas during the 70's and early 80's....I owned the only Fireworks stand in the county at the time....And from nowhere Bob Poole pulled up and bought fireworks from us. I asked him if it was him and we both started laughing...I handed out handbills for him...EVERY "Stinking" Thursday night.....Made two bucks though......
during the middle to late 50's. The postman does it now....

Prunepicker 01-21-2009, 12:00 PM How many remember 3-D Athletics Shop? I spent many hours deciding which
baseball bat I was going to buy. Not a glove came into that store that we didn't

It was a paper drop in the late 60's. That's when I remember it as the
Checkmate. Did Ronny Kaye have something to do with it?
I never patronized it when it was a theater, then again there are a lot of places I
never went to.

I think I remember going there to dance on "The Scene" with Ronnie Kaye in 1967. We sometimes went to the WKY studio for the taping....but I think I remember going upstairs from that former Harley Davidson store on Agnew a time or two for tapings. Am I dreaming????
SoonerGirl26 01-22-2009, 04:18 PM I just put a posting on the SE High School page of "classmates.com" asking people to check out this site. Maybe we'll get a few more people to come on here and share their memories....maybe even some new ones....surely we haven't come up with all the memories yet!!!
Also, don't forget.....

Can't make it this time, (cast). Ricky was working at Tinker AFB and had a very lucrative salvage yard started somewhere down south of OKC at the time. He loved to play pool and hanging out in beer joints I guess is the only way you can do that. Anyway, you knew him, he was a quiet reserved type fellow, hard to get to know but an alright guy I thought. He left a beer joint one night about 20 years ago after playing pool and was beat unconcious and kicked half to death, assumed to be over a crummy pool game. He said he never saw who hit him or anything. Just woke up in the hospital, paralyzied for the rest of his life. Last I heard he was living with his mother back on 48th, and I also heard later she died!! I'm assuming he's still living. Bad deal, kind of liked ol Rick, the ONLY Ricky Montgomery I like for sure!!!!!!
