View Full Version : what's your favorite vantage point of the city?
redcup 05-26-2008, 03:31 PM Cafe Do Brasil has a bar area upstairs that is outside...the view is very nice there. There used to be a waiter there...that was hot so that might cloud my opinion a little!!!!
The view from the Downtown Museum of Art ain't bad either.
:sofa:
mburlison 05-26-2008, 04:28 PM I didn't read all the thread, so forgive if this mentioned, but my 2 favorites are from the Shields Bridge coming into DT from the South (various areas, if you can ignore the light poles) --- also coming in from the South on I-35, just as you bank left, ready to dive down to I-40 that angle there as you get ready to take that exit, at night, great shot....
The Old Downtown Guy 05-27-2008, 08:34 AM Yeah . . . we have lots of great views of downtown and the Capitol dome from our highways and bridges. Unfortunately, these stunning views are becoming more and more cluttered with billboards . . . yuck!

Or in case of our State Capitol, a big freaking ugly tall Popeye's chicken sign. I can't believe city lawmakers allow such an ordinance to have 25+ feet signs on NE 23rd right by the capitol. They should have an ordinance that they can't be higher than 4 feet and must be at ground level. Only in OK do you see a popeyes chicken sign towering in the sightline of the state capitol. Ridiculous!

I'm thinking...or at least hoping...that will be addressed with the Triangle development. Forget the signs, I just don't want a Church's anywhere near that area. In my humble opinion, 23rd street has the most potential of any street in OKC; you have the State Capitol, Oklahoma Heritage Museum, OCU, entrance to the Paseo, proximity to downtown and Midtown, cool looking houses, Shepherd Mall, and the Asian District. I hate seeing what's become of 23rd St. and I really hope the Triangle paves the way for other meaningful developments on 23rd.
edcrunk 05-27-2008, 03:22 PM 23rd street is slowing coming together. i owned a record store for 7 years that was located on 23rd. jason king, owner of the piercing shop, and i used to brainstorm what we could do to encourage more development of that area. there are all types of businesses that are goin in now. eventually electro lounge, which i have a weekly at, will locate down there...
Richard at Remax 05-27-2008, 03:49 PM I really like the far view of Kilpatrick Turnpike just west of MacArthur. The highway goes up a hill and you can see all OKC's buildings. Really something at night.
mmonroe 05-27-2008, 04:16 PM @EDCRUNK, I was referencing when you head south on 35, exit on 15th street, heading back west, you pass High and that one street that goes and meets down by Bass Pro, and if you keep heading west, you eventually cross a bridge.
I forgot to also mention, there is a great shot of the Capitol anywhere along the line of the rail road tracks heading SE to NW from Tinker to the capitol area. I'll have to take a picture sometime.
CCOKC 05-27-2008, 11:11 PM My sister in law used to live in the little gated area inside of (gated Oak Tree).
She lived on the golf course looking south and had no houses on the other side.
We could see all the way to Memorial and the cross on top on Mercy at night.
That was a pretty neat view.
My uncle can also see the city lights from his house at Hefner east of I-35.
River Oaks I think is the name of the addition (another golf course lot).
He was told this was the highest point in the county when he built there.
Not sure if this is true but it does have a nice view of the city at night.

hey, m! you don't turn on 15th... you stay on the access road and take the first right you come to. i think it's 20th or something.

Why do you think the Triangle will have anything to do with it? The Triangle goes nowhere near NW or NE 23rd. There is an "uptown association" trying to get things revitalized along 23rd, but I doubt Triangle will have anything to do with it. I'm just upset our city doesn't have the foresight to pass ordinances forbidding places from having a 25+ ft sign for a fast food restaurant right in front of our beautiful capitol.

I may be wrong, but the Triangle is intended to include the Capitol and immediate surrounding areas. Again, I may be thinking of another project, but I remember seeing something about the Triangle encompassing the Capitol.
OKCMallen 05-28-2008, 09:12 AM eventually electro lounge, which i have a weekly at, will locate down there...
That's awesome. And for those complaining about 23rd, the improvements are monumental just since 2004 when I began haunting the area. Patience, young padawans. :fighting4

No the Triangle is bounded by I-235, the railroad tracks, and Bricktown, essentially.

mmonroe 05-28-2008, 05:29 PM What if I just drove my car into the sign, had legislation hurry and pass a bill before they erected a new one, and then we can have a fund raiser to get me a new car...
Deal?
edcrunk 06-01-2008, 04:16 PM has anyone ever crossed the exchange avenue bridge towards farmer's market and downtown...
that's another super shot of downtown.
jbrown84 06-05-2008, 12:51 AM Don't think I have, actually.
While waiting to purchase a house in the MWC area, my wife and I moved into some apartments near 10th and Air Depot. Everyday I drive to work, I'm taken back by the view from just north of 10th, on Air Depot, looking west. Downtown looks impressive as a sihouette, peppered with trees in the forefront. Just nearby, you can fill up your car at the 7-Eleven and catch the same, but more height-advantageous, view. If you're in the area, I highly recommend the sight.
Plus, at night, you can look north and see the antenna farm, one of my favorite OKC sights.
UnFrSaKn 07-18-2008, 02:55 PM I guess I should mention the best view I've always known about. If anyone has heard of Top O' Town, it's the neighborhood I grew up in. My old street goes right over the top of a big hill, and coming down the other side, it's a perfect view of downtown. It's just south of SE 15th and I-35 on Carter Dr. Try google street view. The picture really compresses the distance but it's not like that in real life.
ThePlainsman 07-18-2008, 03:42 PM Driving northbound on Shields over the Oklahoma River is my favorite NIGHTTIME view of OKC. It's really nice and when all the logos are lit up, it looks really great.
Doug Loudenback 07-18-2008, 04:13 PM I don't know that I have a favorite since I like several, but here's one not too often seen from SW 15th looking north which is pretty nice ... this was taken on October 13, 2007, after leaving my vantage point on/of the Oklahoma Centennial Regatta on the south side of the Oklahoma River ...

Does McNellies offer roof top service or is it strickly byo?
jbrown84 07-25-2008, 11:56 PM the latter ;)

airplane777 02-18-2010, 03:55 PM Coming back from Okarche on NW Expressway (Heading SE), there are some awesome views of OKC. Another view is Rockwell and Wilshire.
OKCisOK4me 02-18-2010, 04:06 PM I believe I've mentioned a spot on here but I have another spot. I always shortcut from NW 39th St. to NW 36th St. between Portland and Tulsa Ave. on Willow Springs Ave. Driving southbound on that street between some of the industrial businesses over there you catch a nice glimpse of downtown OKC...
If you could gain access to one of those businesses roofs, it would make for a nice shot!

I agree....
There are some great "peek-a-boo" skyline shots along Portland. Especially while passing the tennis center, the skyline though distant, looks great with all the trees in the foreground. An aerial view from that perspective would be awesome. I keep trying to imagine what it will look like when Devon tower is complete. I also like some of the views from 39th near I-44.....though those are limited due to the cheap hotel they built on the se corner of that intersection recently

There is a small hill at 34th and Roff with in a neighborhood on the NW side of OKC. From that vantage point one can actually see the landfill at NE 23rd and Sooner (north of Midwest City.) That landfill is at least 18 miles away.
Bunty 02-20-2010, 01:13 AM Oh, Mt. Trashmore.

I don't think anyone wants to take a picture of that, but as stated above, to each their own...
muzique808 02-21-2010, 01:51 AM Not mentioned yet, but there is a nice view of most of the city from Twin Hills, just east of NE 36th and Bryant.
dmoor82 02-21-2010, 07:27 AM Reno and Air Depot intersection has a great view in MWC!basicaly anywhere in MWC where there is a hill or elevated road has a great skyline shot.
decepticobra 02-21-2010, 08:42 AM best vantage point is the ft smith junction. any other vantage point is second rate.
dmoor82 03-18-2010, 08:57 PM Now that I take I-235(brdwy ext) out of Edmond alot now instead of I-35,I get treated to The fantastic skyline view heading South. The skyline looks massive about 1 mile North of The 44-235 interchange!
Architect2010 03-18-2010, 11:27 PM My favorite now, is when you are driving north on I-35 heading towards the Oklahoma River and the interchange. Right before you get to the river, the plane of view widens up and downtown suddenly burts into view, and it's a very complementary, and beautiful angle. You can also see the OUHSC skyline from here as well. I want a shot from this point!

That was just totally amazing! Makes me wish I was back in my college years so I could learn how that's done. Fantastic!

That's going southbound over the the Wilshire bridge. I like that view as well. Something about that viewing angle really does make the skyline appear larger or fuller.

Urbanized...You are right. Unfortunately (and I'm not making excuses...really), I have been out of school for so long I can't even remember how to do algebra or geometry. Believe me, I've tried. Back when I was in school I think the Univac 1050 was the top of the line computer.
It is just fascinating what the younger folks are doing with their knowledge of computers and such today.

SkyWestOKC 03-19-2010, 07:13 PM I like the I-44 view south of I-40. Kinda cool when you pass airport road and you make the right turn and then you slowly curve around again and you see downtown to your 2 o'clock. Nice sight in the evening.
corpsman 03-19-2010, 08:44 PM I used to really enjoy the view from the top of the hill at the south end of Crescent. On a clear night looking south down Highway 74, one could see the downtown skyline of OKC. Once you started down the hill, OKC disappeared until you got near to the old Deer Creek Farm. Now there is too much light pollution from the north suburbs. I still like looking at the downtown skyline during the Christmas season. SkyWest's is a really good view as well.

^^^ I like this vantage point as well, but right now there is a big ugly gap, that will soon change!
CaseyCornett 03-23-2010, 09:56 AM My favorite is on Walnut Street just north of the bridge.
In the evening you can see to the west the sun setting through the downtown skyline and to the south the lights of Bricktown coming to life.
Urbanized 03-23-2010, 10:22 AM My favorite is pretty close to that one: coming down Harrison from the direction of I-235 and the health center. Since it approaches the core at an angle to the grid, it re-orients the skyline, closes the gaps between buildings, and makes the skyline much more dense and interesting.
CCOKC 03-24-2010, 12:16 AM I can understand that point of view. I always get that impression when I am coming into downtown from the south. Since I so rarely do that since I live on the North side it puts things in a different perspective and seems somewhat exciting somehow. I like living in a place where I always have new things to explore.

Bunty 04-03-2010, 01:32 PM So after about 2 years and 4 pages only 3 or so pictures to offer to get a first hand idea of these vantage points. Is that an indication that the views are that boring and undramatic?
earlywinegareth 04-03-2010, 02:39 PM From atop the space needle during the State Fair.
OkcMetal 04-03-2010, 02:45 PM beneath a dancer at Night trips.
OKCHerbivore 04-03-2010, 06:29 PM NW 5th between Dewey and Walker, there is an abandoned lot (like most of midtown, sigh...) that has an amazing vista. You can feel the weight of the buildings from here, as in most of midtown.

And the incompleteness and airiness of this area still endears it to me, until it gets filled with wealthy peeps who can afford those killer views:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/eutopianaccident/4488209048/
And of course the views down the river from anywhere West of Western are great, especially at sunset!
bluedogok 04-03-2010, 06:48 PM Baptist Hospital sits on the highest point in the city, I believe.
What???
I had always heard that where Mount St. Mary's School is located was the highest point, after that it was always a mix of Lake Hefner or the Baptist location with the tower farm area being behind that.
I do know there is a good view from the roof of One Benham Place and the OPUBCO Tower. When I worked night shift we would watch the lightning hit all the towers from the third floor of OBP looking to the east, we had to shut the systems down during storms since that was before we added a UPS system to the servers, workstations. So we would turn out the lights and watch it dance up and down the towers. The favorite place to watch Fourth of July fireworks was on a sailboat on Lake Hefner, they just seemed to happen all around you back when the country clubs had their own displays.
One of my memories growing up was coming back at night from Altus or Lawton on I-44 and cresting the hill on the turnpike near Tuttle and seeing the city lights just seem to spread out before your eyes, I always loved that.
andy157 04-03-2010, 08:08 PM Looking out from the Petroleum Club has a nice view.......ditto
