I was at Primo's the other day in MWC and saw a magazine I haven't seen before, called "My Midwest City". It looks to be a production of The Oklahoman though...lot of the same writers. Anyway, here's the story.

"Hospital expansion will add 100 beds and more patient services this year"
By Ann Kelley, staff writer

Midwest City - Midwest Regional Medical Center is scheduled to undergo a $25 million expansion this year that includes adding more than 100 hospital beds.

Plans call for adding a seventh and eithth floor to the main building, constructing a new physicians tower and a child care center, and renovating a former Target store into office and retail space.

The hospital waill grow from 225 patient beds to 360, Chief Executive Officer Doug Arnold said. Laboratory, radiology, respiratory care and food services also will be expanded, Arnold said.

Bed space in the Women's Renaissance Center will increase from 12 to 32, and the center will get additional mamography and ultrasound areas, he said.

The physicians' tower will be at least 80,000 square feet with modern offices, as many as six operating rooms and an ambulatory unity, Arnold said.

The project is a joint venture bettwen the hospital and local physicians.

Midwest Regional Medical Center often enters into partnerships to enhance medical services for the regioan, a hospital spokewoman said.

In Novemeber, hospital officials announced they were joining other metro hospitals to build a south campus for the Oklahoma Heart Hospital. Midwest Regional Medical Center is contributing 20% of the $75 million project.

---

So let me clear up some confusion here though. The writer didn't clearly define the different stories here...I knew about it all and I had to re-read it to get where she was going.

1 (some history) - This is the 4th major expansion of the hospital. The first was then the Mullunix Tower was added (the oval section at 4 floors. The second was then they added 2 more floors to that tower. The third was the new ER on the front of the tower. They also have multiple offices around MWC including: Doctor's offices on Douglas, Women's Center offices on Douglas, the Birthing Center on Midwest.

2 - So progress will finally be made on the Target building which they have owned since Target vacated it. Part of an ongoing project to consolidate offices and connect this lot back across Parklawn Dr. to the hospital. There are a few structures in the way right now that have fought off the hospital for decades.

3 - Im not really sure where they think they are going to add beds at the Rennaisance though. it's land locked and can only go vertical, but I don't think it's constructed for any more than the 2 split levels it has.

4 - The physicians tower APPEARS to be something entirely new from the current hospital. It LOOKS as though they are going to demolish the old part of the hospital for this, but I'm not sure...no details there.

5 - The Heart Hospital on 240 and Sooner hasn't done much yet, so we'll see when that happens.

It's good to hear that they are doing this.

The only differences I can see in the picture is the two extra stories at the top of the new tower and a new facade on the older tower.I don't see a "new" physicians tower in the picture. I guess they are talking renovating the older tower into a physicians tower.

Hopefully that area around Reno and Midwest Blvd won't look so much like a run down part of town after they do the renovations on the old Target. If we can get something useful put into the old Walmart that area wont look half bad.

On edit. Make sure Doug Dawg adds this building to his High rise website when it is completed. It will be the first building in the Mid-Del area that meets his criteria of 8 floors.

Yep. I'll probably add it sooner, once I see that it's a done deal. Can you confirm that it is? I'd like to check out the hospital source ...

Found this text which seems to be something like Midwest City's version of Downtown Okc's Skyline Snapshots: http://www.mwcok.com/resources/eoutlookfy05.pdf

Midwest Regional Medical Center will soon embark upon a major expansion, adding a seventh and eighth floor to the existing hospital as well as utilizing the now-vacant Target property. There are also plans for additional ambulance services and a physicians' office building adjacent to the hospital.

Adding two new floors will add about 100 patient beds, which will require expanding support departments such as laboratory, radiology, respiratory care and food service. In order to accommodate the expansion, certain departments will be moved to the old Target building which is being programmed by architects for a new facade and landscaping. The building will house departments such as human resources, ambulance services, business office, pre-admissions, home health, outpatient rehab services, warehouse and central supply. There will likely also be retail space at the south end of the building facing Reno.

The new architectural plans are subject to licensure and architectural approval by the state.

Both the Target renovation and the hospital expansion should be completed in about 24 months. (Courtesy Midwest Regional Medical Center)

Here's the pic from the PDF file, which looks the same as that originally posted, but which now seems to have disappeared ...

I was not able to find a reference at the hospital's website, Welcome to Midwest Regional Medical Center (http://www.midwestregional.com/index_flash.php) but I didn't look really closely.

Good find, bombermwc!

I was mistaken. That tower on the Right side is completely new.

It's hard to tell from the angle of the new picture whether they are taking the old tower out or not. You can't really see it in the new one, but I think it would be a mistake to toss it.

This shot here shows you how big the ER has become there in relation to the rest of the place. ALL that white stuff that wraps around the tower is ER.....the part on the right is also a hallway connecting visitors to the rest of the hospital so they dont walk through physicians areas.

I noticed last night that more lights are on at the old Target. They also installed a new garage door in place of the the old Westlake entrance.

It kind of looks like something may be happening at the old Albertson's and Wal-Mart as well. OGE and ATT were both out at Albertsons a couple of days ago.

There has been a fair amout of activity at the old Wal-Mart off and on over the last month. Then again the city may be using it. I remember reading in the paper a few months back that MWCPD used the store in training excercise.

I wonder if Midwest will upgrade their trauma level after all the expansion is completed. Right now there a level 3 center. I know Baptist, Southwest and Mercy would love to have another player in the level 2 trauma rotation.

Well the ER is pretty new. They just built a completely new ER about 5 years ago, so don't plan on anything happening. They added a FastTrack area to the ER (fast my ass) in the last remodel. But if you go look at the place, you can see the new ER beacuse it's the only white stucco part of the place. But it is fairly good sized as it stretches back into the old ER space as well...not a bad sized department.

But to qualify for the other levels, you also have to have certain specialists available on-site at all times. That's expensive, so if they don't have to, they won't do that. It wouldn't really help their bottom line any.

Here is a link to the architects website. Follow thru to portfolio then healthcare and you'll see a better rendering of the project.......

Welcome to JHBR (http://www.jhbr.com/)

BTW, I would love to see them tear down the old Target and scrape the site clean. Currently it's an eyesore and blocks the view of what will be a nice looking hospital complex.

Also develop the Target site and sea of parking into one story medical/office park.

Again, the hospital owns the Target building....and has owned it since Target moved. I don't know why that part of the project hasn't started up....

I meant to get an updated picture today, but the floors are coming along nicely. It's all framed in and you can see the structure really well now. I'm still dissapointed in not seeing the new physicians tower and still nothing going on at the old Target.

I forgot to get a picture while I was there yesterday, but the top floors have been glassed in. They're adding elevators as well.

The whole thing looks completely retarted to me. When they added floors 5 and 6 back in the 90's, they matched the architecture and the addition blended in. Now it looks like the hospital is wear a glass hat. It doesn't match the rendering exactlly, but it's pretty close. No movement on phase 2...the physicians tower to the north, or on the Target conversion.

Here's a quick shot I got at the hospital this morning. It's a mess inside with all the main elevators closed off too. Can't say I'm a fan of the mis-matched architecture, but since when has a hospital ever matched what they already had?
