solitude 06-24-2008, 04:02 AM Thunder, I didn't mean blog. It's in the forums at the FrontierCityThrills site. (http://www.frontiercitythrills.com/) Jesseda 06-24-2008, 07:20 AM yes that frontiercitythrill site is really good info, I have been on that site reading the post and stuff for about 5 months now, the ite is really informative. Taggart 06-24-2008, 11:39 AM I can hardly believe Frontier CIty is still open. I think the State Fair is 100 time better And you wonder why Oklahoma has such a reputation... I see A LOT of theme parks. I make a living designing them. I know Frontier City is not even close to being the best, but it's not the opposite either. Frontier City is one of the only small parks who is trying to maintain somewhat of a themed atmosphere. And that aspect is improving as well. If you're just looking for an amusement park - an empty lot filled with whirl-&-hurls and coasters, sure, there's plenty of those. But there are plenty of other people, me included, who prefer an enjoyable environment. And Oklahoma City just happens to be lucky enough to actually have a "theme" park. That's pretty rare for a city of our size and stature. So if you'd rather ride rides run by an ex-con smoking a cigarette through the fry-grease scented air, that's fine. But I'd rather take my wife and kids to a place that's actually thinking about the family experience. But to me this whole argument seems like if we got the Sonics then complained because we don't have the Lakers. Thunder 06-24-2008, 02:02 PM Taggart, do you think Six Flags will regret selling White Water Bay and Frontier City now that the Sonics will move to OKC? jbrown84 06-24-2008, 03:08 PM I don't think they'll pay much attention. They sold their Seattle park too. centaurian 06-24-2008, 03:26 PM Yes taggart you may be right. but its hard to get excited about a new rollercoaster at FC, when i ve ridden many of the country's best. from ohio to texas. FC needs room to grow, and there is none. they need acreage. sad to say but i was at FC when i was a kid and that was 30+ years ago. and remember some of the same rides that are there. check out Cedar Point in Sandusky Ohio. has one of the largest collections of rollercoasters in the country. and they are some scary one s, been there several times. Richard at Remax 06-24-2008, 03:55 PM cedar point is amazing. been there a few times myself. not that FC needs to turn into a cedar point. But one great ride can do wonders for a park. SOONER8693 06-24-2008, 06:08 PM I too worked at FC. I was on the gunfight/stunt team in the 80's. Those were the days when our group, Colonel Colt's Company, headed by Jim Rollins, the original Marshall at FC had that contract. We had over 80 different shows and never did the same one twice in a week. Anyway, everything at that time was done half-assed. They did build us a complete set/street in 87, in believe. But everything was done with the mindset of getting by with the least expense. It definitely showed in the rides, the appearance of the park, the "kids" they hired to work rides and concessions, even the supervisors were not very proffessional in the way the park was operated. I have been to FC very few times since, but I get the impression that not much has changed. People of Oklahoma want a nice place to take their families adn I don't think that is too much to ask. There are other smaller parks around the country that are nice, well-kept, and pleasant places to go for a day or two. There is no reason Oklahoma and OKC can't have a park like that. I think the condition of the park and how it has gotten is the major frustration for people about FC. That is my 2 cents worth. jbrown84 06-24-2008, 06:32 PM FC needs room to grow, and there is none. false false false They own acres of undeveloped land and even more could be easily bought by condemning nearby property. Six Flags Over Texas is out of room. Frontier City is NOT. Six Flags OT has upgraded over they years by taking out old rides and replacing them with new ones. Frontier City can also do this. The Nightmare Mine roller coaster (a wild mouse) is for sale, and as soon as they get rid of it, I would expect that to be the location of a new roller coaster. If you haven't been in the past 2 years, you can't possibly judge. The new ownership has put in the first roller coaster in 15 years, painted every single ride, and gone all out on the park's 50th anniversary. Taggart 06-24-2008, 11:49 PM Very well said. Trust me, I used to be one of Frontier City's biggest critics. I thought the place was junk - and it was. But I really have seen a slowly dramatic improvement over the last year and a half since PARC bought the property. I know for a fact that PARC has plans to completely remodel and re-work every part of the existing property and once they are satisfied, they have 60+ more acres to expand west of Coltrane Rd. and they own substantial room for expanded parking and space zoned for a hotel if they decide to move into that market. When PARC bought the park from Six Flags, they bought a mess, but they really have shown an interest in improving and staying for the long haul. I'm going to continue to support them until they make a bad decision. I've been to most US theme parks as well as Cedar Point. I wouldn't want Frontier City to become that. Places like that are run amuck with unruly kids that were dropped off by parents that wanted to get rid of them. I do think Frontier City would benefit from some new attention-getting thrill ride (and it's currently in the cards), but for right now, their focus is on fixing what they have. And I think that's a pretty good starting point. JWil 06-25-2008, 12:09 AM I've been there twice. Once was to drop off younger brother and the other was to check out Oktoberfest. The place sucks and I've never had an urge to go there. But I was spoiled and grew up with Disneyland, Knotts and Magic Mountain within driving range. Jesseda 06-25-2008, 10:00 AM I wish frontier city would add more than just rides, I really like how silver dollar city is, with all the crafters and shopping and different eateries that are not just nachos, hamburgers and hot dogs which seems to be 90% of frontier city food. I am glad frontier city add more shows, oh also i almost forgot when i took me niece there about 4 yars ago we went to one of the shows the signing show called decades i believe, the cast was mainly all young teenagers and they where lip singing nothing bad there but at least pretend you are singing it not just laughing and talking to one another during the song, has that changed or is the shows still bad? OKCMallen 06-25-2008, 01:37 PM I too worked at FC. I was on the gunfight/stunt team in the 80's. I was one of your young punk ride operators. ;) Karried 06-25-2008, 02:17 PM Yeah Jesseda, I agree with you about Silver Dollar City... I love that place. When we first moved here I bought Season Passes for FC .. we only went a few times, more than enough for us. Whitewater was bad too. I hate the theme parks here. I would die for something like Cedar Point here. Just for the roller coasters and great rides. We have Nothing here than even compares. I drive to Branson just to ride Powder Keg and Wildfire over and over. I waited in line forever over and over to ride The Dragster and the Millenium in Cedar Point. I'm headed to Disneyworld in August.. I just wish I didn't have to go so far to ride a decent ride. I absolutely love amusement parks, I just hope that Parc does something substancial to improve FC. sroberts24 06-25-2008, 02:25 PM i'm headed to orlando in december, the best rides there are the dueling dragons, front row on each one of course, the incrdible hulk last row, and any row on the rockin roller coaster! those three, well i guess four, are so bad ass! Taggart 06-25-2008, 07:09 PM Silver Dollar City is really nice. They do customer service and food better than Disney many times. Holiday World is another that gives great rides and service. jbrown84 06-26-2008, 05:42 PM I've been there twice. Once was to drop off younger brother and the other was to check out Oktoberfest. The place sucks and I've never had an urge to go there. Once again, if it wasn't in the last year and half, then you can't judge. It's changed dramatically. Jesseda 06-27-2008, 10:11 AM Hi Karried, Silver dollar city is suppose to add a huge most expensive ever roller coaster to its park next year, it is suppose to be like the manic mine ride in dollywood, the dollywood mine coaster is out of this world, have you seen it yet? Thunder 06-27-2008, 11:21 PM Silver Dollar City, isn't that park smaller than Frontier City? I remember learning about their hours is so much shorter. Jesseda 06-30-2008, 07:27 AM The park is way bigger, the reason its shorter days of operations is weather, and the hours I dont know why if the hours are shorter, there is about 3 times more stuff at silver dollar city than frontier and the land area is so much larger, the rides are really great not just slapped up in a month or two, and there is actual theme in the different areas, kinda like how disney themes there areas, at silver dollar city i like the grand expo area, that is where they have a area that looks likea 1920s county fair jbrown84 06-30-2008, 10:28 PM So are we whining that this roller coaster is taking too long to build or not long enough? I'm lost. Karried 06-30-2008, 11:19 PM Thanks Jesseda, I can't wait to see the new ride .. I'll be in Branson for Thanksgiving but I'm not going to get excited about the rides since the weather might not be cooperating. I really do enjoy Silver Dollar City and Celebration City isn't too bad either. The night shows are pretty cool. Taggart 07-01-2008, 03:24 AM It must be that the coaster isn't taking the "just right" amount of time...oh and isn't a bigillion feet high and travels at mach 12.6. However, I heard it operates in two modes; "damned if you do" and "damned if you don't" Jesseda 07-01-2008, 07:06 AM the new owners of frontier city is doing really good, i mean we have not hada roller coaster sinec the diamond back, the park itself is just to small, if they do have the property on the west side why not use it? Taggart 07-01-2008, 03:08 PM Because they want to fix what the currently have first. This is only the beginning of an entire re-model of the park. MrBojangles 07-02-2008, 12:57 AM There seems to be some pretty pricey homes just west of FC property. Also there is a new housing addition Oakdale Park, just NW of FC, which already has several homes occupied, it is also going to be a gated addition. So not sure they can expand much farther west without a legal battle. Taggart 07-02-2008, 01:51 AM Frontier City owns about 160 acres. The park itself is only taking a third of that. The rest is on the other side of Coltrane Rd. Frontier City also owns the lot north of the parking (used as overflow parking) as well as the abandoned motel and parking next to FC property. So they do have plenty of room to expand parking if need be or if they decide to build a bigger entrance or something else. They can also expand the park into the huge lot across the street. They won't for a long time though. okcustu 07-06-2008, 04:16 AM I just wish people would comparing Frontier City to Cedar Point or Silver Dollar City both are in destination spots and for a long time had the support of the community thats just not possible in a city our size (ironic we've always been too big). If you want better rides support the park. By the way all of you "I'll just wait to go to Dallas people $15 to park; $25-$50 to get in; $15 for a souvineer cup; $10 for real food; $20 to avoid the often ungodly lines and $1 for a locker every time you ride a major coaster. Don't get me I love SFOT as a park, but Six Flags sucks as a company The Steel Lasso opens soon saw it testing yesterday Thunder 07-06-2008, 09:21 PM I drove by to see the park on the 4th before going to the zoo. It was still not open. Kinda sad for the people with high hopes to have it open for the 4th. okcustu 07-06-2008, 10:32 PM I would think this weekend is the earliest it would open okcustu 07-13-2008, 10:02 PM the official media day for the roller coaster I'd thursday the 17th not quit sure if it will open later that or not. Best case scenario it could have soft opening earlier in the week it looked ready to open Saturday they've been running it all week OKCMallen 07-28-2008, 09:25 AM I rode this coaster yesterday and it was pretty solid, actually. The duration of the ride is pretty short, but of course, the line moves quickly as well. From the ground, it looks neat, but not like it goes very fast...once you're in it, though, it's pretty cool. In fact, it swings out over the thoroughfare there a little, which I thought was a nice touch. The park overall needs some work. The newer rides in the last 5 years or so are pretty cool and all. And some of the areas are extremely neat still, like that around the entrance to the Renegade Rapids. However, the entry-area as you come through the gift shop needs some work, and also, the restaurants are all pretty crappy with limited food choices. Many of them were clsoed yesterday (they might always be closed on Sundays), and waiting in line for a beer was annoying. The staff seemed completely apathetic and were yelling back and forth to each other about personal things, which i found annoying, but they're kids, so what can you expect. The productions have increased in quality significantly, I will say. The Steel Lasso and Silver Bullet are probably the best two rides in the park. LIL_WAYNE_4_PREZIDENT08 07-28-2008, 11:37 AM I went to Six Flags last week. I'm going to Frontier City tomorrow. I'll compare When I get back OKCMallen 07-28-2008, 11:41 AM Oh, and the Eruption was awesome. Terrifying. But awesome. The converted Ghost Mountain was a little lame. Lil Wayne, I don't think that'll be much of a compairon. LIL_WAYNE_4_PREZIDENT08 07-28-2008, 11:45 AM Oh, and the Eruption was awesome. Terrifying. But awesome. The converted Ghost Mountain was a little lame. Lil Wayne, I don't think that'll be much of a compairon. LOL I kno. Im suprised u actually got to ride Ghost Mountain.. It's usually closed. Karried 07-28-2008, 11:56 AM I saw the ride on TV... it looked pretty cool but not very fast.. oh well, I'm sure the younger kids will love it. I'm headed to Florida to get my Roller Coaster fix... I just love roller coasters... and really wish we had an awesome theme park here. But, I would have loved to spend my money in our state instead of giving it to Texas and Florida. This is always my pet peeve about OK, not many direct flights and no really good amusement parks. But, if that's the worst I have to deal with, it's not a bad lot. I just deal with it.. complain for a few minutes and then move right on along. LIL_WAYNE_4_PREZIDENT08 07-28-2008, 12:00 PM You should go to Cedar Point bro nthey got hella roller coasters Karried 07-28-2008, 12:02 PM I love Cedar Point, it's my most favorite park ever.... What was your favorite ride? LIL_WAYNE_4_PREZIDENT08 07-28-2008, 12:06 PM um well kinda long story but I didnt get to ride the millinium. and the dragster wasnt open.. So prolly the Raptor or Praying Mantus. What were yours Karried 07-28-2008, 12:24 PM oh I feel bad even saying this but the two that you didn't get to ride were my favorites... sorry! I have a thread on Cedar Point around here somewhere talking about the experience.. You'll definitely have to go back. I would do Cedar Point over Disney if I wasn't leaving out of Orlando and meeting friends for vacation. That's the only reason we are even doing DisneyWorld and Universal Studios is because we're right there in Orlando. I'm hoping there are enough big rides to really enjoy. We have the Water parks too if we get tired of standing in the long lines in the heat. OKCMallen 07-28-2008, 01:19 PM LOL I kno. Im suprised u actually got to ride Ghost Mountain.. It's usually closed. They converted it to a ride where you have guns to shoot targets...I forgot what it was called, but it was nothing to write home about... jbrown84 07-29-2008, 01:04 AM Quick Draw. It's an interactive "family ride". These types of rides are popular lately. Universal Studios has a Men in Black ride like that, and they have a Scooby Doo one at some of the Six Flags. OKCMallen 07-29-2008, 08:30 AM I was excited to try it; it seems like a neat concept. The gun was unresponsive and it was just a little cheesey, that's all. jbrown84 07-29-2008, 10:37 AM Yeah that's how they all are. Definitely more of a kids+parents thing. okcustu 07-30-2008, 12:14 AM no the ones at disney and universal were much better even the scooby foo ride at Kings Island was better. Its also an unoriginal design. The Steel Lasso is getting pretty good reviews its faster than it looks and the cool new restraints give you way more freedom than the "batman" inverted coasters as long as you expept a family ride its a lot of fun OKCMallen 07-30-2008, 11:19 AM Yeah, the Steel Lasso isn't pushing the envelope or anything, but it's worth waiting in line... sgt. pepper 07-30-2008, 02:00 PM They converted it to a ride where you have guns to shoot targets...I forgot what it was called, but it was nothing to write home about... i heard it's air conditioned |
