View Full Version : Nic's Grill
soonermike81 07-09-2018, 10:04 AM I bet they’re stretched a little thin between the two locations. Trying their hardest to how their midtown location after pumping so much cash into while maintaining their cash cow on penn. I went by a couple of months ago at lunchtime in the middle of the week and they were closed. No sign to explain anything. A little frustrating but I feel bad for them. Hard to swallow that their new location may not ever be as successful as the original.
rayvaflav 07-10-2023, 03:33 PM I would like to think that I'm the one that discovered Nic's on Penn back is the 2000's but I know that's not true, but I did discover it in my small world and alert my friends and coworkers to it, so much so that my one friend drives down from Guthrie and gets a spot at the counter every Thursday, it's been going on for years. I haven't been there in awhile. I made it down last week and Nic/Justin asked me "No fries like usual, right Bubba ?". The last time that I was there was pre-pandemic, that's 3 1/2 years ago and Nic still remembered my order. Now that's some serious memory and some seriously personal service !
Shortsyeararound 07-11-2023, 12:06 AM Drove by today at 12 and there was no line. I almost stopped. Almost.
My 9 year old grandson loves burgers and eats like a horse. He recently spent a couple of nights in the hospital with an intestinal virus, so I'm going to take him and my son (his dad) to Nic's for being so brave. He's never been there, and I can't wait to see his expression when he sees one with "cheese and everything". I've heard that Nic isn't always there anymore. Does he have a rotation that might land him there on certain days? Not too big of a deal, but I'd like the kid to get the treatment I've always gotten there.

He doesn't have a schedule really, but I will say Nic has been there more lately. I probably went 4+ years without seeing him there, but he has been there two out the past three times I went. Javon is great and will take care of you if Nic isn't around.
Roger S 07-13-2023, 05:04 PM Nic(Justin) had/has an amazing memory.... When he still served breakfast he knew my breakfast and lunch orders and if I was there on chicken day he knew I wanted chicken and not a burger.
I've not been in there in about 4 years but I bet if I walked in tomorrow he'd say "Cheese and onions, mayo only, Bubba?".

i don't think one can adequately describe how great the breakfast was at the original location back in the day ..

Agreed.... I'm pretty sure he had some kind of magical ham hidden in the back... He would see me walk in and walk to the back with a knife and come out with freshly sliced chunks of ham and fry them up.
It was my go to breakfast spot during the week. I would be there 3-5 times a week.

God bless your arteries.
That breakfast was amazing, I know it was a lot of work and hard to serve many people at a time but that western omelet, hasbrowns and texas toast all cooked right in front of you was so good. Hated it when he stopped.

Was this at the current location on Penn?
BoulderSooner 07-14-2023, 03:33 PM Was this at the current location on Penn?
yes
Plutonic Panda 07-14-2023, 03:45 PM yes
Wow I would have like to have tried that. His onion burgers are amazing. Might just be the best burger I’ve ever had.

Nic's Place closed yesterday for good so they can put their focus back on Nic's Grill and bringing breakfast back and looks like they have some plans for the house to the north of the Grill.
^
That sucks but I'm sure someone will take over that space.
The basement bar is one of the best spots in town.

yes it is ..
warreng88 05-13-2024, 09:24 AM I ate there three times and it the upstairs area always seemed out of place. You had waiters in white shirt and tie, nice white table clothes and eating a big, drippy (delicious, I might add) burger on it. I ate at the bar downstairs once and it seemed to make more sense.
WhoRepsTheLurker 05-13-2024, 09:26 AM My wife and I ate there about two weeks ago on a Friday evening and it was dead upstairs and downstairs. We both left pretty disappointed with the food quality, though the cheese curds were the only thing that brought our experience up.
citywokchinesefood 05-14-2024, 11:52 AM The space needs to embrace the speakeasy concept a bit better. The downstairs bar has a great vibe, the upstairs section feels more like retail/office space. In a perfect world I would love to see a gift shop/art gallery/office space upstairs, and the restaurant concept housed completely downstairs. The kitchen location is a hurdle to servicing volume, but the space is so cool it has been criminally underutilized since the location opened.

Fully agree. Go all in on the speakeasy deal vs just being a bar in the basement of a burger restaurant. Make the cocktails/drinks first priority and serve a limited menu. Really needs to be a separate “concept” than whatever restaurant/business is on the ground level.
Bummer. I loved the downstairs bar. I tried going a couple weeks back and the door was unlocked....but no one was there. Hope they do well with the original location.

That sucks! I still have half of one of my Nic's Place Sweet Deals of the Day. That place is/was so good! The original location is only better IF you can get in within 2 hours with food left.

It would be a bad PR move for them to not honor those at the Penn location
John1744 05-19-2024, 08:32 PM I love Nic's Grill and the burger is one of the best I've ever had but yeah it's not super convenient to get to and honestly it's borderline getting gross inside, the dust / potentially mold coating the AC units and ceiling was enough to give my wife the willy's last time we ate there.

it is also up to about 20 bucks for a burger and fries

I mean, a Wendy's double cheeseburger meal is like $14, so I don't think there's any problem with a top 3 burger in the US and fries being $20, lol. Come on now.

11.59 with a drink

While it makes sense a Nic's burger would be more than a Wendy's burger, the line of thinking is the overall scale should be lower.

tuckers is under 14 ...
the garage is under 11
they changed the prices at the original to match NIc's place .. (and we see how well that went for them)
Colbafone 05-21-2024, 07:38 PM Ah, congrats on making up a random price. I have a receipt in hand for the Wendy's #1 double cheese with a medium drink, medium fry - $13.68. Wendy's on May and 36th.
I understand you are saying that $20 for a burger is a bit crazy. I also recently got an Egg-a-nator at The Garage. With fries and tax it's 13.66, no drink.
I agree, these prices are all too high. Not much you can do about it though. You can either eat it or not, ya know?

the price i listed is from an online order from the wendys at I40 and Macarthur ..
HOT ROD 05-22-2024, 11:29 AM wow, and I thought burger prices were ridiculous here in the PacNW. Ours might actually be lower than in OKC.
Urbanite 05-22-2024, 01:30 PM After some quick look ups at online ordering, mainly from NW OKC locations, here are the burger prices from varying offerings. No tax, burger only, based on a double bacon cheeseburger (or single depending on patty size at some locations).18840
^
Thanks for that. Interesting.

Very interesting... I guess Five Guys isn't THAT bad after all, at $12.69, actually cheaper than Tuckers. I wouldn't have guessed that.
FighttheGoodFight 05-22-2024, 03:56 PM Garage looks like the best deal TBH
CCOKC 05-22-2024, 05:15 PM I really like S&Bs veggie patty, and they have a slider size. As a small woman, I don't need a full sized burger, especially if I split a side of Fire fries with my husband. so this is my go to place. According to their menu, a slider costs $5.59 for most of the burgers.
Urbanized 05-22-2024, 07:52 PM Oof…double meat cheeseburgers are inherently gross to me. And I am a devoted and incredibly regular consumer of cheeseburgers.

for thicker patties, i totally agree with you... it's just too much, as if the ratios are all off. however, two smashed patties with double the seared exterior and a piece of molten cheese in between... that's close to cheeseburger perfection, imo.

except of course several you listed INCLUDE fries ... in that price ..
also New state "bacon" is super thick almost enough to call it pork belly instead of bacon ... and tuckers single for instance is larger then some of the doubles you listed

Agreed, two is just too much of everything, for me. The bun, meat, cheese, and onion rations are just right on a normal, one-patty onion burger, again, for me.

Too many doubles I see have double cheese, too, which is too much for me! Also, the degree to which some people smash their burgers varies, so if it's a real smashed burger, I could see how I might enjoy your preference!
