The name will change. Bennett already offered to leave the Sonics name in Seattle when he proposed the buyout last week.

It prolly will be Sonics, but the NBA doesn't disallow name changes... they just look down upon that. The Royals became the Kings and the Braves became the Clippers, so it can happen.

I like the Sonics name and the Sonic boom tests from back in the day make it work, not to mention it could be tied into Tinker AFB.

But if the name changed, I'm pushing hard for Thunderbirds. Ties into Indian Heritage and the 45th Infantry. Two things to be proud of for sure.

Oklahoma City Thunderbirds? I don't know....

The people will get to speak at the next election. Motivation supreme.

Considering how well Mick did at his last election after temporarily landing the Hornets, I think you're a little off. Dude, the sky isn't falling!

Do you have any examples of a precedent to support your theory?

Read the newspaper in Seattle. OKC is now held hostage. It's the NBA business model.

I rather like the Oklahoma City Sonics...although I'm not wild about Oklahoma City SuperSonics.

We can tie that in to Tinker, as JWil noted, and of course, there's Sonic, itself. Our mascot could be a giant Tater Tot!

It is good that this passed with a good margin, it shows that most of the city supports having a team. If the suburbs could have voted I would say that it would have passed with an even wider margin.
I think it would be good if the name was changed to something more uniquely Oklahoma. Like maybe the Twisters or the Boomers.

The SuperSonics still face hurdles in leaving Seattle. The city has sued the team to force the Sonics to honor their lease in Seattle’s Key Arena, which extends through 2010. OOPS!!!

If the NBA does not locate a team here, the sales tax will last through Dec. 31, 2009, raising about $100 million for Ford Center improvements. The practice facility would not be built.
Loose ends and details not yet explained.

With voters giving their approval, the next vote will be in the hands of NBA owners, who are scheduled to meet next month to vote on a proposal by the Seattle SuperSonics’ owners to relocate to Oklahoma City.
Let's go to Nonna's and and join the premature ejaculation party.

We will be a big league city, it's just a matter of when.

- The owner of the Sonics is from OKC
- The Sonics' lease with the city of Seattle will expire soon
- The NBA considers OKC one of the best cities for an NBA team
- OKC passed the sales tax just before the NBA board of governors get together to vote on the relocation

Is any of this starting to add up, yet?

You will have to fight for me for first in line for tickets. Especially with the prospect of a nicer arena to enjoy my 41 games a year without crappy bathrooms on the first floor.

Also, i heard there will be another vote coming up in say Nov, to prolong this tax the voters just approved.

I would be surprised if that happens as early as November. That may have been the plan at one point, but I think it will be 2009. As you probably know, there was a MAPS 3 that was sort of in the drafting stage, and which originally included the Ford Center improvements.

I think that will undergo some significant revisions... more than just taking out the Ford Center project.

Well, are we still a big league city W/O a big league team? That's been the big selling point. Why are you backing out of that idea now?

We will come more into the national spot light with a NBA team. When I talk to people from out of state they still think that we all live on farms. With more national exposure we will change that image, and make this city a true big league city. This city is going in the right direction and we need to keep the city moving in that direction. If we do not this city will turn back into what it was in the late 80's and early 90's.
And where did any of us say we were backing out of the idea?

Yes, I agree that all will be well now that we can play basketball in OKC. Whew, we almost voted ourselves back to the horse and buggy. Hey wait a minute!!!! I thought Mayor Mick said this would not cause a tax increase? If so, why am I paying an extra cent in sales tax? I wish you guys would get your stories straight.

I will sleep like a baby tonight unless I start worrying about Clay losing all that money because he loves OKC so much.

Wow. I can't even express how happy I am. And I will do as I said and shop 100% in OKC for the duration of the tax. So, for those who would like to shop elsewhere to protest (which I actually support - one should be willing to suffer a little for one's principles), I'll do my best to make that up.

really? dude... well id be happy to give my pass to the kid, does he also want to shoot the game with a 50 pound camera on his shoulder the whole time, cause that's what is expected of me if I have the media pass... you don't have to go to the games, you don't have to like that it passed, you don't have to enjoy the fact that when the Hornets were here it infused almost 2 million dollars into the downtown economy. Now it's up to the NBA vote next month! We are one BIG step closer to getting a permanent NBA team and will have one of the best arenas in the country regardless. It's also great that the renovation takes into account the new blvd. with its grand entrance there. If the blvd. were there now the Ford Center would have no presence.

Having that entrance will enhance the overall appearance of the blvd. where there will one day be a large amount of pedestrian activity. There will be the new much larger convention center and convention hotel proposed on the south side between Robinson and Shields, the new park and gardens on the south side between Robinson and Hudson, a proposed "retail district" on the north side between Robinson and Hudson, and future Bricktown development south of Reno along Oklahoma Ave. where the blvd. will go at-grade through downtown.

I've seen the blvd. proposals and it will be a 6 lane avenue with a landscaped median and parallel parking on both sides. Sidewalks will be extra wide with two rows of trees for shade and all intersections will have brick crosswalks. It will be like this (at-grade) from Oklahoma to Classen. Obviously the east end will be developed first with the western end coming later (especially as the Arts District/Film Row area to the north grows). The Ford Center as the first major project is just the beginning.

I don't think you're an OKC hater because you don't support the tax extension. I do, however, think you're just a hater, period.

You're entitled to your opinion and others have respected that. You, on the other hand, have felt obligated to insult and namecall while adding nothing of significance to your side's argument.
