View Full Version : What will you Gain?
Karried 03-02-2008, 09:07 AM I know what I'll get by voting YES On March 4th .. a dream come true.
But, I'm curious, at the end of the day after the NO voters have voted and say you win and get your wish - a NO Vote..
What will you have really honestly gained?
* Saved your 1 cent tax - whoo
* No NBA
* Same old,old arena
* Satisfaction that you beat the 'man'
I'm really curious.
What will this do for you? Will you go out and petition for the one cent tax to go to the poor now? To feed the hungry?
When you wake up the next morning and think.... 'yay! we won!'
What did you win?
What will you gain by voting no?
Karried 03-02-2008, 10:47 AM Well, I found a few answers to the above in a news article this morning:
If voters decide no ..
.
Mayor Mick Cornett (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Mick+Cornett&CATEGORY=PERSON) has said the city will not get an NBA (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=National+Basketball+Association&CATEGORY=ORGANIZATION) team if the measure fails.
Cornett (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Mick+Cornett&CATEGORY=PERSON) said there is no plan B for funding Ford Center (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Ford+Center&CATEGORY=ATTRACTION) improvements, and convincing NBA (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=National+Basketball+Association&CATEGORY=ORGANIZATION) owners to allow a relocation to Oklahoma City would be impossible without voter support of arena improvements.
The Sonics (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Seattle+SuperSonics&CATEGORY=ORGANIZATION) likely will leave Seattle (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Seattle+SuperSonics&CATEGORY=ORGANIZATION) regardless of Oklahoma City's vote, but many observers believe other cities with new arenas such as Kansas City or Louisville would be more likely destinations if the Oklahoma City proposal fails.
The MAPS for Kids sales tax expires Dec. 31. Unless voters OK a new tax measure, the sales tax rate would go down by 1 cent starting Jan. 1.
City officials worry a failed proposal would endanger momentum the city has gained from MAPS and MAPS for Kids. Voter approval for those measures is credited with getting the city into NBA (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=National+Basketball+Association&CATEGORY=ORGANIZATION) discussions in the first place.
Oklahoma City could still bid for college basketball tournaments and other events, but the Ford Center (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Ford+Center&CATEGORY=ATTRACTION) would have a hard time competing with newer arenas in Dallas, Kansas City and Tulsa, among other places.
Vote YES!!!!!

betts 03-02-2008, 11:11 AM I see this vote failing as comparable to Oklahoma City hitting a brick wall. It will hurt, it will stop us dead in our tracks, and it will damage our forward progess.
The ridiculous thing about all this is that most likely, if this vote fails, we will see the same improvements to the Ford Center in the MAPS3 vote. But the Sonics will already be elsewhere. We will end up spending the same money, minus the practice facilty (which if we are smart, we will sell naming rights to) and we will have no team. Of course, the no tax people could be all fired up by this victory and we'll never have a MAPS 3. If that happens, I will be moving. There are places I can live that are growing and changing, and a lot of them have professional sports to enjoy. Luckily, I am at a time in my life when I can do that. So are all our college graduates.......
Karried 03-02-2008, 11:20 AM I agree.
I'll never forget my first visit to Bricktown/Downtown OKC on a Sunday afternoon about six years ago - it was ghost town. I thought I was in the twilight zone.
Fast forward a few years, Maps and Hornets.... bustling, vibrant crowds and excitement galore .. the NBA! Finally something awesome to do with the family!
Now ..... ?

Karried 03-02-2008, 02:04 PM I'm still waiting for someone to tell me what they will gain by voting no.
bornhere 03-02-2008, 03:01 PM I will be ready to move forward and support MAPS 3, with projects that benefit a broad cross-section of citizens.
betts 03-02-2008, 03:05 PM Anyone want to bet that MAPS 3 won't include this same renovation to the Ford Center if this doesn't pass? I'll bet a LOT of money it will, and expect to win. That's why this is so foolish. We're going to end up fixing up the Ford Center anyway, to be competitive with Wichita, Tulsa and Omaha (the other midwestern cities with no distinguishing characteristics and nicer arenas) and we'll not have a team. That's what seems like a waste and foolishness.
FritterGirl 03-02-2008, 03:12 PM Betts,
I highly doubt that if this fails, MAPS 3 will include renovations to the Ford Center. I believe the focus of that initiative is for Core to Shore, and the aquisition of land for a potential new convention center (2-3x our current center's size), work on the boulevard and then other projects.
The Ford Center may eventually get its needed improvements, but not through MAPS 3.
Oh GAWD the Smell! 03-02-2008, 06:07 PM The thought of having a team that everyone can root for is exciting for a state divided by crimson and orange
This.
ultimatesooner 03-03-2008, 09:51 AM I'm not a big NBA fan but I will vote yes. The 1st time I stepped into the Ford Center I had to seriously ask some people if they ran out of $$ when it was about 70% finished. The inside of that place is a dump and has been since the day it was opened. I think our city deserves a better arena for all types of events and it seems like we will be doing it for a minimal cost
