Where can you go to see painting, photography, sculpture, film, large-scale installations and more, all made by young Oklahoma artists? The answer is the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition’s sensational event Momentum: Art Doesn’t Stand Still. To be held January 11 & 12, 2008 at 3532 SW 2nd St., (view map and directions here) the exhibition gives audiences an opportunity to view, purchase and experience work by Oklahoma visual artists ages 30 and under amidst the talents of local musicians, performers, poets and more.
On Friday, January 11, visitors will experience the lighter side of the event at Momentum: Downtempo. The evening will begin with a Preview Party from 6-8pm with music by Carter Sampson and food from Sauced, Saturn Grill, The Diner and Mediterranean Imports. Momentum: Downtempo will continue from 8pm-Midnight with performances by local bands Magnificent Bird, Tall Cotton String Band and The Rounders.
For a louder, faster paced experience, Momentum: Full Speed will be held Saturday, January 12 from 8pm-Midnight. The art and performances will be accentuated by music from JGST, Pudding Attack and The Disposables.
Jennifer Barron, who serves as Co-Chair of the event along with Christian Trimble, said “You truly never know what to expect at Momentum. The variety of artwork means that there is something to interest or inspire anyone. And maybe it’s most inspiring to know that all that diverse creativity came out of our community!”
Curators for the exhibition are Paul Medina, Professional Artist and George Oswalt, Professional Artist with an MFA from University of Oklahoma. They will select the art, film and performances for the exhibit from the more than 100 young artists that are expected to submit work. The two curators will also select the artists to receive the more than $2,000 in awards. Additionally, one talented artist who is chosen for the top “Curators Choice” award will receive a five day trip to Paris, France!
Tickets for the Friday night Preview Party are $25 and tickets for each night of the opening weekend are $10 in advance or $15 at the door and can be purchased online (see below), by phone at 405.232.6991 or at Arockalypse, Bicycle Alley, Blue 7, Book Beat, Sauced, The Velvet Monkey, Thompson’s Books (Edmond), Guestroom Records (Norman & OKC), or Dwelling Spaces (Tulsa).
The Momentum exhibition will be open to the public, with free admission, through January 19. Hours are 5-8pm Wednesday-Friday and 10am-2pm on Saturday.
