We just published our most recent Shady Restaurant of the Month review on El Regio Pollo. If you haven't tried this place, it is definitely a unique find for OKC. Here's a link to the full review:

I love El Pollo Loco.

I was pleasently surprised by El Pollo Chulo (?) over on 23rd just east of Meridian I believe. They do one thing and do it well: grilled chicken.

If it's "shady" then why does it get a good review.

If it's "shady" then why does it get a good review.

From the Shady Restaurants Category (http://www.eataroundokc.com/category/shady-restaurant/) on our site: "Here, you’ll find reviews of restaurants with poor lighting, bad curb appeal, questionable clientèle, and dangerous parking lots. Those with the best food rise to the top and receive our monthly “Shady Restaurant of the Month” award."

We're looking to find those places that you wouldn't normally want to go, but where the food is actually quite good!

Yes, El Pollo Chulo is very good. There is a review or two on this site. Also it is east of Meridian, not MacArthur.

I love the review lol. The whole bit at the end about how the convenience store must be some sort of front for some other business had me rolling.

I've always wanted to try one of those walk-up things. Not sure if I'm brave enough to go to this area alone ;)

The name of this place is EL REGIO LOCO and it's on the corner of 29th and May, close to the Airport Road exit. It's a small food trailer on the lot of a convenience store (cash only). It's not expensive $13 whole chicken, $7 for half. There is actually seating inside the convenience store which is being converted into a small restaurant for El Regio Loco. I first went to El Regio in Austin TX about 6 years ago and it was AWESOME!!! So when I saw this place which looked the same i got excited. I found out that the owner in OKC worked for El Regio in Austin TX and he also worked at El Pollo Loco in San Antonio Texas. He combined the names and created"EL REGIO LOCO". I expect this place to BLOW UP like El Regio did in TX with all of it's franchises in Austin, San Antonio, Houston and Dallas. Go check out EL REGIO LOCO, you will not be disappointed!!

Hey, thanks for the correction on the name, Big Abe. Andrew, the writer of our article, says that he lost the title in translation -- he didn't actually see it written anywhere but was interpreting it from the words of the owner. I am correcting everything on our article to reflect the true name -- El Regio Loco.

finally made it to regio loco yesterday! lemme say it was off the beaten path and therefore a blast... who knew i'd be putting my l337 highschool spanish skills to the test?

for $13 cash (no tax?), you get a whole chicken, two sides, some limes and a some tortillas. the chicken is definitely the star of the show. it's marinated in various spices (chili powder, cumin and lime is all i could make out) and grilled with some onions. they take the chicken, quarter it and wrap it up in some butcher paper along with the onions. it's quite delicious.

the two sides were a bit blah... both of them being about the same. the first was elbow macaroni in a soupy broth and the other was mystery meat and vegetables in a soupy broth. it would've been nice to have a bit more variety between the two sides.

the tortillas were tasty and fresh. i generally don't prefer the corn tortillas served at your average tex mex restaurant because there they generally lack flavor... not so with these.

definitely a shady restaurant, but well worth the visit. -M

for those fans of regio loco...

it looks as if they've set up shop in the old taco bell on sw 36th (grand blvd) & western... not sure if they're opened and ready for business, but i did see their sign on the building this past weekend.
