View Full Version : Technologically challenged

Ok, I have a confession to make. I am somewhat technologically challenged, which means there are many new things to do with the latest up to date technology that I am not familiar with  .

I remember when somebody told me that they were going to put my phone number in their PDA, and I thought...what the heck is that? Last time I heard the initials PDA, it meant "public display of affection." Anyway, later I found out that a PDA was like an electronic day planner with all kinds of nifty neato buttons.

Anyway, for those of you out there who are technologically advanced, instead of using initials like PDA, etc...to describe something, could you please use non-technological words, and kinda tell us the word(s) that goes along with the abbreviation? I still don't know what PDA stands for :noldus: .

Personal Digital Assistant.

Keith, when I was a substitute teacher, fresh out of college, I deligthed in using 'big words' when subbing 6th graders. My response to you is the same as it was to them when they asked what I meant -- look it up :D

How do you look up abbreviations :noldus: ? As you can tell, I don't use big words. I do good to impress people with small words. :)

PDA, MDT, PC, ABC, NBC, CBS, MTV, etc. So many abbreviations, so little time. Hey, Keith, get off your back side and use your dictionary.

There are a lot of the abreviations that the definitions are either not in a dictonary, internet site, or anywhere else. So, with a lot of us that were born before 1975, we may not know and can not find out. That is why we need more clarification.

I'm not really sure what you're talking about. Post-1975, were babies implanted with certain information that was not available beforehand?

If y'all start talking about that pre-'75 technology, all your tubes and such, I'll be equally clueless... well.. not me, I've had enough experience with those things to at least know what they are. Worked at RadioShack for 8 years before it turned into a cell phone emporium.

I just can't think of any commonly used abbreviation/definition that cannot be looked up in the dictionary or wikipedia?

People just need to get of their kiesters and get with the times ;)

No. actually people need to slow down with their verbage and stop saying things like 24/7. Life is too short to not enjoy it. Just rememer (if you are old enough) the old Cains commercial with the suave crooner. "savor the flavor." Just take it easy and slow down. Many people will understand you better.

"get with the times?" I will pass. I take my life and verbage slow so people can understand what I mean. I do it seven days a week, twenty four hours a day.

I'm sorry about that guys. Yesterday I put a post on the tech board using an abbreviation that probrably some people dont know what it means(MMORPG - Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game). I'll try not to use too many abbreviations in the future.

Alrighty then... I have no qualms about leaving a few people in the dark.

Some 'verbiage' (which this is funny, the way you spelled it, "verbage", it is defined as follows:

verbage

<spelling, jargon> /ver'b*j/ A deliberate misspelling and
mispronunciation of verbiage that assimilates it to the word
"garbage". Compare content-free. More pejorative than
"verbiage".) -- as an aside, I think that's somewhat humorous.

I'll agree with you on some things such as lol, cya, et cetera. However, others such as your example 24/7 are complete representations of phrases used in normal converation. Would you prefer someone say that something is twenty-four-seven?

How about this acronym: KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid)?

Since the topic of this friggen thread is using acronym's I'll keep my post REAL short. How the heck did this post wind up in the Announcments, Suggestions, Feedback forum for you old-timers or ASF forum for you young guns.

This must be the fault of Masterwolf2004...

"Would you prefer someone say that something is twenty-four-seven? "

No. It should be "twenty four hours a day, seven days a week."

How EXACTLY would you say that in military time?

Dear mranderson,

I am considering writing to NASA to see if they are in need of anymore expendable lab monkeys they would like to shoot into the atmosphere. If affirmative, would you consider one of the positions?

Do you not know what is meant by 24/7? Does anyone?

Is it not then an effective means of communication?

I'm not sure what the OKC Chat elderly are up in arms about. I mean, if you want to buy a PDA, that is simply what it's called. That's what it says on the box, it's a PDA. If I want to buy a Volkswagon, can I not refer to it as a "VW"?

Is the source of this contraversy me telling people to look up words they don't understand? That seems a little silly.

Man, Midtowner, I owe you a big THANKS! I've had a Palm sitting next to my computer for a few years now, and I've always called it a PDA, but you know what? I never knew what PDA stood for! LOL! I guess I learned something today! I guess sometiems by using initials we tend to forget what the original terms were. For example, just to show you how much people depend on initials now and how much people have actually forgotten what they mean....we were playing a general trivia game the other day, and one of the questions for the "Challenging Card" was, what does AARP stand for?

By the way, I guess this originally fit in the "ASF" forum (LOL), because Keith started out the post maknig a "Suggestion" asking people to start explaining what their abbreviations stood for! Oh sorry Keith.......ASF stands for Announcements, Suggestions, and Feedback, and LOL stands for Laugh Out Loud! :)
