View Full Version : Crossroads Mall
Probably the best we could have hoped for... Hope it leases up and is successful.
La Gran Plaza features national chain retailers such as Burlington Coat Factory, Ross Dress for Less, Sonic and Foot Locker. But most of the mall's eateries and shops are Hispanic merchants. It has gone from 10 percent occupied to 93 percent leased, said Legaspi, president and owner of The Legaspi Co.
traxx 03-29-2013, 03:48 PM I would not be surprised if they re brand it as something else
Mall Next to a Major Interstate But You Can't Figure Out Where to Exit and How to Actually Get There Mall
They will be allowed to stay if they want.
Here's what Crossroads will be modeled after.
Fort Worth - Shopping Mall - La Gran Plaza (http://www.lagranplazamall.com/en/home.aspx)
I hope they can come up with a name better than The Large Place.
If done well it will attract attention from the entire city, not just the Hispanic community. Generally, this a postive move. God knows OKC could use a little variety.
Yeah, because the Asian District, Capitol Hill, our American Indian population and German population etc. are just too homogonized.
Jettmiester 03-29-2013, 05:54 PM It was on the lower level, next to The Record Bar on the Dillards end of the mall. Great store!
thanks!
Jettmiester 03-29-2013, 05:56 PM Growing up on the east coast I remember Orbach's in NYC, similar type clothing retail as well... I believe there is no relation to the two.
SoonerDave 04-02-2013, 08:22 AM thanks!
That space was also occupied by another clothier of the era called Napoleon Nash, which I believe was Orbach's predecessor.
Emmer Brothers was another local clothing store, and it occupied two floors on the south side of the west (Penny's) corridor. Had its own escalators - very cool for a non-anchor tenant. That was back when the place opened with Dillard's, Wards, John A. Brown, and JC Penny...
SomeGuy 04-02-2013, 10:29 AM Is toys r us still across the street from Crossroads or did they move?
bchris02 04-02-2013, 10:46 AM I hope this actually comes to fruition. Many times these types of developments are proposed but never get off the ground.
Personally I would rather see the mall bulldozed and a theme park built there.
Roger S 04-02-2013, 11:25 AM Is toys r us still across the street from Crossroads or did they move?
Unless they moved in the last month... Still there.
SomeGuy 04-02-2013, 11:47 AM Unless they moved in the last month... Still there.
Wow I'm shocked, you'd think they'd move over where best buy is now or in the Moore/Norman area to get more business

Within the last few years, that location was, in fact, slated for closure, but some 11th hour change of heart somewhere within the Toys-R-Us brass prevailed and the location persisted. No idea why. It would have been ideally suited to move over to 240 Penn Park.
bchris02 04-02-2013, 02:19 PM How is the former Crossroads Regal doing? The last movie I went to see there was Star Wars Episode II and it was actually a very nice theater then.
ljbab728 04-13-2013, 01:20 AM An update on the new plans.

Dustin 04-13-2013, 07:33 PM How do you make a mall "hispanic themed"?
Jettmiester 04-13-2013, 10:30 PM Paint it horrendous colors, play horrendous music and favor Hispanic language in all print throughout the mall. :) actually, I'm looking forward to see how this ends up.
Achilleslastand 04-13-2013, 11:26 PM I thought the mall was already "hispanic themed"?
Dustin 04-13-2013, 11:43 PM If they open up some good, local mexican restaurants or taquerias I would definitely frequent the place.
I hope it turns out good.

ShiroiHikari 04-14-2013, 08:50 PM I hope this succeeds simply because I would hate to see the building sit there and rot.

Umm it already rot years ago
Jettmiester 04-15-2013, 10:57 PM It's not beyond repair. Just needs a little of that human touch... A little touch up and a little paint

Can't argue with that =)
Hopefully, there will be an Official Kiosk
Providing proper immigration papers/applications.
Just to keep things fair and to the point.
In recognition of the human touch.
For which Oklahoma used to be famous.
sorry . . . my thinking was influenced by:
The Border (old Jack Nicholson/Border Patrol movie)
The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez (about a "failure to communicate" involving horse trading)
El Norte (another independent film about attempting to achieve "the american dream")
plus personal experience, in the workplace, with a fairly representative sub-set of sub Rio-Grandian folks--not of the "Brown Berets" persuasion.

ShiroiHikari 04-17-2013, 12:47 AM If you think Crossroads is rotting, clearly you've never heard of Dixie Square Mall...a mall that closed and literally was left to rot for 30 years.

Yeah that is true, I will never understand why it left to rot for 30 years until it finally got demolished last year

It sat vacant for many, many more years than it was operational.
At least it was a good prop for The Blues Brothers movie.

Jettmiester 04-18-2013, 01:01 AM Visited crossroads Tuesday with a good friend that practically grew up in that mall. Was fun seeing it through her memories. Took a few pictures till security politely asked us not to. Got about 36 pics snapped tho. They were working heavily in the Dillard anchor store. And the Hispanic music was playing full force. I am optimistic of what can be done. Time will tell.

There is another site dedicated to Dixie Square Mall that has a whole lot more information and pictures over the years of it than Dead Malls.

Bunty 04-24-2013, 05:33 PM It's good the project is led by a man who already has experience in doing what he wants to do.
jn1780 04-24-2013, 09:48 PM How come they just don't call it Plaza Mayor? It would have a similar name as La Gran Plaza.
The Spanglish sounds silly when you include Crossroads like its a proper noun.
Highlights from that Oklahoman article:
This month, 20 new leases have been signed with local tenants, including restaurants, gift shops and beauty salons. Negotiations are continuing to secure major tenants such as a department store, grocery retailer, entertainment venue and clinical service
Plans also include turning the former Montgomery Ward into an entertainment venue like a nightclub. Adjacent to it, mall owners want to build a rodeo arena capable of hosting national competitions that can also be used as a concert venue; that project is expected to be built over three to five years
The 3-story anchor formerly occupied by Dillard's will be converted to a bazaar, similar to a flea market

I agree, but I suspect it's because at the end of the day most people are going to still call it Crossroads.
MonkeesFan 04-28-2013, 06:40 AM I hate to say it but reading about the changes makes me sad because I had great memories of that mall :(
I am glad that they will make it into a useable space since it has been dead for years so it is overdue though!

I had to laugh at that since I love The Wizard of Oz! Well done!
bluedogok 04-28-2013, 04:39 PM I remember driving by the one in Fort Worth when it was vacant and since the transformation to a Hispanic oriented center it looks like it has thrived. I think this will be a good thing for Crossroads and that population won't be as bothered by a little more difficultly in access than the general population seems to be since it will be a place of their own.
Zuplar 04-28-2013, 06:08 PM I happened to drive by this today on my way to Austin. Pretty interesting, but the whole area looked to be very Hispanic themed.

It used to not be when that area was mostly vacant.
Spartan 04-28-2013, 10:54 PM The inner south side of OKC used to be largely vacant/abandoned/derelict properties before waves of Hispanic immigration re-populated these neighborhoods (granted it was a "slow" transition over the 90s and early 2000s and not just a wave).
My grandparents who live in the Western Heights neighborhood around SW 44th/Walker (right behind Capitol Hill HS) were initially very anti-Hispanic and over time have become very pro-Hispanic. It's a really amazing process were the assimilation machine in these inner city neighborhoods are supercharged as all parties involved realize tangible benefits as a result of diversity. My grandparents will be the first to tell you, to use their language, "that the Hispanics are good people that don't really bother anyone who have mostly taken over boarded up houses."

Same can be said for most everybody. Most of any group are good people. It's the idiots among them who make them look bad.
MonkeesFan 04-29-2013, 02:20 AM I have a question, do you think a rodeo would be a good idea? I mean do people still go to rodeos? I thought turning the mall in a rodeo is going to be a huge failure but I may be wrong though

From the article:

I take it as they are going to see how the mall is doing in several years and see if it would be viable.

warreng88 04-29-2013, 03:44 PM Why would they? I mean it has been dead for years
Why would they build a rodeo? I would guess they have a lot of land and it might be a viable business for that area.

I have family that lives on SE 36th St which is a pretty secluded area & a group of Mexicans built their own small rodeo about a half a mile away from my family members house. I think a rodeo is a great idea for this area.
