View Full Version : Crossroads Mall
megax11 04-25-2010, 06:06 PM Well, that's one down. What about filling all of the empty plazas that degrade at the expense of greed, because they can safely sit on their cans and make bank on all of the Bingo halls?
What about filling the vacant Circuit City location with the inevitable Best Buy, who is thinking of moving after their lease at Crossroads expires, or even TRU, who is bailing on southside, while Moore gets a TRU superstore?
Why is southside OKC the only home of a regular Target, while every other Target is a Super Target?
Why did we have to be the unfortunate ones to have a mall owned by greedy owners, who refused to modernize the place?
Why don't we have quality theatres like Warren.
I guess it's at least good, we're getting a bookstore, but they're building yet another church by my house, so why does the mall property need to be home to more church related content, when the southside needs to attract more retail, instead of car lots, churches, and fast food joints?

Midwest City, Yukon and North May and NW Expressway and Rockwell are all regular Targets. All are new or remodeled and look similar to the south store. In my opinion, southside is just as nice as every other area of the city. The only downfall is I-240. The majority of I-240 is rundown apartment complexes. Only one complex has updated it's look. There has only been one new car dealership open southside in the last ten years (Fowler Dodge). The other dealerships opened on existing car dealership property. If Best Buy moves to a new location I very seriouly doubt they will use the old CC Store. I worked out of the store as a home delivery driver when it opened. The stock room is tiny and the store is smaller than your average Best Buy store.
Jesseda 04-25-2010, 07:16 PM the american people are getting lazy, why walk in a mall to go to that one store when you could pull up to it at a strip mall, and people wonder why everyone is weighing more than what people weighed 25 years ago.

There's a brand new Bob Moore, I believe, at 89th and I-35.

Why is having a car dealership a bad thing? Would we prefer that everyone went to the "Mile of Cars" in Norman or the dealerships in Edmond?
Larry OKC 04-26-2010, 12:05 AM When they remodeled the target on North May (and took over the space occupied by Office Depot, was really disappointed that they didn't make it a SuperTarget (they did add some grocery). When asked was told by the store manager they were 8 sq ft and 12 parking spaces short of the minimum requirements. What a joke.
Then when the SuperTarget opened on Memorial was surprised it wasn't open 24 hrs (I work graveyard and shop after I get off work @ 5 to 6 am. Was told they weren't in competition with Wal-Mart. Right. And that is why they waited to build a SuperTarpet until AFTER a Wal-Mart SuperCenter went in.

Target whines about having boxes on the floor is one of the reasons why they do not open 24 hours. Also, another reason is to save money. They only need one or two cashiers overnight..... Mainly, they just do not want shoppers around with pallets and boxes everywhere due to the risk of injury, plus constant fixtures setup throughout the store (planograms setups). This also include the use of the (forgot the name) to hang decorations/signage from the ceilings.
metro 04-26-2010, 02:31 PM Thunder, I don't buy that, because every time I've been to Target, I've seen them stocking during the day. In fact, they have some of the most annoying stockers there are. Not to mention, Target employees wear those blasted walkie talkies at full volume without headsets. Why can't they make them wear a headset or earpiece?

I didn't say it was, but someone else brought it up and I was just adding information. The Bob Moore dealership is very nice and I would say it's an excellent addition to the southside.
jbrown84 04-26-2010, 04:04 PM I have never seen stocking at Target, whereas if you go to a Walmart or Neighborhood Market after 11pm it's like navigating an obstacle course around the pallates and the ones that are moving make no attempt to avoid running you over. #IhateWalmart

Metro, you're gonna have to buy it, bucko. They do stock during the day from the red tub, but they do NOT want to stock with boxes and pallets on the floor while customers is there.

Exactly! The MWC Target is always stocking during the day - I had to ask a stocker to please let me by, nicely but twice, at 10 AM one Friday morning. They were stocking from boxes in the personal care items - shampoos, etc. Two of them were talking about their planned dates for that night - way more info then I needed to hear!
And ITA about the walkie talkies - they are annoying.
Go Bucko :LolLolLol

at least Target seems to care more about maintaining the stock on their shelves throughout the day. Walmart could give a rats @ss whether or not a certain item is depleted on the shelf or not, if what you want is gone, they automatically expect you to buy either the generic spinoff of it (usually the walmart brand) or the more expensive version of that product.
...oh, and trying to buy a specific product at Walmart that your local sunday paper is featuring a saving coupon for a discount is next to impossible. Its almost guaranteed to be out of stock until that next truck arrives again, which usually doesnt arrive until either the sale on that product is over, or your coupon is expired.

I shop the West Side Walmart in Norman and have never experienced any of these problems, guess I'm just lucky.

Techincally they are not new, Bob Moore Ford was already established in South OKC. They had to move from I-35 and I-240 because ODOT needs the land for the interchange rebuild. If it was not for the rebuild of the interchange they would still be there on 240.
Let's get back to the main topic..... Does anybody know what stores are still left out there? I know the last time I went, all the stores were dead and most only had one-two employees working. It seems like the remaining stores were the ones that could pack up and move/close the whole store in just a few days. I think Bath and Body Works will be one of the last hold outs. They tried to stay in Heritage Park until the bitter end. I talked to the store manager the day before they closed. She said the only reason they were closing was that the mall management had been to lax on security issues. It only took them 3-4 days to close the store.

I don't tend to go inside WM very often, but She Who Must Be Adored (easiest task I've ever had) doesn't tend to come home without what she wanted to obtain from there. The other WM's are far enough away our fam doesn't use them enough to offer an opinion.

I really wasn't responding to your comment specifically. There had been a previous comment that seemed to complain about car dealerships being bad or too prevelent.

The last time I went (about a week and a half ago) I noticed a couple stores had closed down. Candyoplis, Tuxedo Junction, and Spencer's were the few I remember being like "what? when did this happen?" Some stores I remember being open are Claire's, Grand Nails, Hot Topic, Chick-fil-a, Rue 21, Victoria's Secret, Frederick's of Hollywood, Bath & Body Works, GNC, Chinex, Eargazum, Bronx, Eastern Treasures, and Gamestop. Since Waldenbook has closed I rarely go there anymore. It's a bummer walking around seeing all these stores I grew up loitering at closed down.
Larry OKC 05-03-2010, 12:16 AM Is that Spencers Gifts? I thought they closed all of them here in the metro a few years ago?
Thunder 05-03-2010, 12:46 AM Spencers finally closed there?!?!?!?! I see NO NEED for them to CLOSE! They get decent traffic! Another one still open at Penn Square. The candy store, maybe, but Spencers?!

Everytime, I walked by the Candy Store at Crossroads over the last year... I thought of the Simpsons episode where they visit the dying Springfield Mall and Homer buys the gummy worms in one telephone pole sized piece.
decepticobra 05-03-2010, 05:56 AM People don't need malls with big box and lifestyle centers. OKC has plenty of the former and will develop more of the latter. A mobile society likes to drive up to the door and walk out with instant gratification. Long ago, people bemoaned the loss of the catalog stores - now they have them again x 100 with the internet. Most malls will die - the ones that survive are better run, more creative and extending their purpose beyond convenience shopping.
you bring up an interesting aspect, something that hasnt dawned on me but seems to be the reason why so many indoor malls are dying: ebay & amazon.
Dulahey 05-03-2010, 09:06 AM Spencers finally closed there?!?!?!?! I see NO NEED for them to CLOSE! They get decent traffic! Another one still open at Penn Square. The candy store, maybe, but Spencers?!
This is only hearsay, but the management of the mall is pretty crazy. The rent in that mall just keeps going up and up, which is the main reason most stores are leaving.
Remember the Funcoland that was just outside the mall? over near Best Buy? They left because when their new contract came up the owners(I think it's the same ones as the mall) wanted about double what they had been paying.
Again, just hearsay from a friend of mine that used to work at the Gamestop in there. And as a couple years ago, that Gamestop was still the top selling store in the district even though it's in Crossroads. Guess that's why it's still there. I can't imagine that lasting too much longer though... it's a ghost town in there.
megax11 05-03-2010, 10:37 PM If online and strip malls were hurting malls so much, they end up like Crossroads, then Penn Square and Quail Springs Mall would be burting and losing retailers too.
Thing is though, they aren't. They are flourishing as they always have been. Why?
1. If they are being charged insane rent, then at least the mall owners are listening to their needs. Which leads to 2.
2. Those malls are modernized and not living in the past, due to greed.
I heard time and time again, that Crossroads merchants kept asking the owners to modernize the mall, if they're going to be charged insane rent. Needless to say, the owners just ignored them.
That's why Heritage and Crossroads suffered the same fate.
I refuse to walk into Crossroads anymore, because it pains me to see that mall dying, due to greed. I loved going to that place every day, but not anymore.
I would rather remember it for what it was, then see it, the way it is now.
jbrown84 05-03-2010, 10:45 PM American Eagle has been gone for a few months. Don't know if that's been mentioned.

They have a Spencers at Quail it's on the upper level next to Macy's Sooner Mall has a Spencers as well.
Larry OKC 05-03-2010, 11:05 PM Thanks for the info...used to go to the Spencers Gifts (think it was in the location you are talking about) at Penn Square (but wait, you said Quail) and was there when they were having a store closing sale. Was told by the Mgr that ALL the locations in the Metro area were closing. They were getting more sales thru their mail order than thru the stores.
Anyway, will check Quail out.
oneforone 05-03-2010, 11:44 PM It kind of sounds like the majority of the stores left in Crossroads are leaving as soon as their lease is up.
I am willing to bet most of the stores are finding better locations in South OKC and Moore.
I give it six months and the mall will either consolidate the existing stores to one area/level of the mall or they will close for good.
Closing for good may actually help the mall attract a developer that will turn it into something useful.

do people really ever BUY anything at Spencers?? seems like everyone just runs to the back of the store to laugh and giggle at all the sex and fart toys with their friends for a few minutes, then leave.

Yes I bought quite a few things there (NOT the stuff you mentioned)...they had Garfield and Coca-Cola stuff among other things.

Yes, it's owned by the Federal Reserve, and is in turn part of one of the Maiden Lane entities (which consist of "toxic" assets acquired from banks as part of the bailout.)

megax11 05-04-2010, 07:41 PM RIP Crossroads Mall
1974-2010.
I somehow hope the property is renovated and turned into a retail strip mall, and not something useless like another community college or government agency.
Southside needs more retail, as I am starting to refuse to shop anywhere, just so my zip code isn't on the receipts, thus allowing those people the honor of knowing people from southside will shop at their stores.
Spartan 05-05-2010, 03:20 PM Crossroads needs to be turned into a community college or a factory or something irrelevant, or even better, it needs to be demolished. Maybe we could borrow the wrecking ball from SandRidge for a day and put it to GOOD use on the south side..
The south side deserves better, and it's a RIPE market for a real lifestyle center development--along either I-240 or 134th. Good demographics, good growth, absolutely NO retail. Or even better.. the city needs to get in there and try and get some retail to open up in Capitol Hill. Why not offer a TIF district for a developer to put in an urban shopping strip, and try and get many of the former Crossroads retailers to locate there (like JC Penney's, American Eagle, Spencer's, etc, idk what else).
Trying to get an AMC or Dickinson or some chain movie theater to open in Capitol Hill would also be INCREDIBLE for revitalizing the south side. A Warren would be even better.
OKCisOK4me 05-05-2010, 06:07 PM I am going to have to make a trip out there just to see how many stores are left. I keep seeing former Crossroads stores in new locations around South OKC and Moore.
I guess it doesn't hurt to say this by now but our south side location of Tuxedo Junction was moved out of CR back in mid March to S. 19th St. & I-35 in Moore at Riverwalk Center. It's an additional 5 miles to the south but the tug & pull goes both ways. May lose business from MWC/Del City and points east but pick up more business from Moore & Norman and points south. There's more traffic in this part of Moore too, so overall it's been a better situation for our owners.
jbrown84 05-05-2010, 06:30 PM I somehow hope the property is renovated and turned into a retail strip mall, and not something useless like another community college or government agency.
Ummm, okay. Define useless.
soonervegas 05-06-2010, 09:31 AM I went by yesterday just out of curiosity. There may have been 30 people in there, maybe. A whole wing had practically no stores in it.
The structure seems to be pretty sound and it is near two major interstates.......so how does something get mismanaged to that extent?
rcjunkie 05-07-2010, 04:16 AM I think the biggest problem with Crossroads is access, even though it's bordered by two major interstates, it's not the easiest place to get to, especially if your traveling through and not familiar with the area.

Spartan 05-07-2010, 11:32 AM That's pretty cool looking, Plansit. This is the problem I see though: How many other places in the metro could make an awesome TOD? Hundreds if you're counting the Crossroads site.
Crossroads Mall needs to go, and a different retail project needs to happen for the southside and we need to get this Crossroads nightmare behind us. Why does there have to be ANYthing there? Why can't it just sent empty and cordoned off? Eventually a fire will demolish it for us.
There is no need to salvage the Crossroads site or do ANYthing to save the mall. We need to focus on the future, not the past, we need to focus on sustainability and the Crossroads site was flawed before it ever got built simply by where they chose to build it. Even in terms of the southside, that was a BAD location. One benefit though, to its location, is that it will make it very easy to forget..being wedged between a ghetto and a landfill, nobody will even notice it unless they're driving on I-35, and even then, we can always put a wall up..or shocking concept for Oklahoma, plant some trees.

okclee 05-07-2010, 11:46 AM Spartan, I agree this Crossroads obsession is unbelievable. Over 40 pages of discussion here.
Demo the entire site and make it a park. Trees and a nice plaque much like a tombstone, giving homage to what once was here.
